Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and have searched tons on info on this topic but haven't came up with a common solution.

I have a spare server, an HP Proliant ML30 Gen9 that is currently stopped. I need a file storage solution for a small business that I own, with permissions to files. I need also simple access to the server, something like dropbox, with mobile app and easy desktop access from other computers.

What should I opt to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance

BR

A windows domain will accomplish most of what you are looking for.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Id really suggest going cloud here. Its probably cheap for most uses for a small buiness, and much less to worry about, more relible, more secure, and less config knowledge needed.

You can do most of this on a windows domain, but there is a lot ot learn, and you should probably hire someone that knows what their doing to set it up.

thanks for the quick answers.

@Electronics Wizardy currently I'm using BOX cloud but since it has high costs and I have that server stopped I was looking for a way to save money and could afford more space also :)

I will deep search on windows domain and will try to set it up by my own

How much storage are you using?

Look at azure, they have a lot of management for windows aswell.

But really, try to go cloud, massive security holes if you do AD wrong, and most people do something wrong.

All other solutions like freenas, omv or xpenology won't work?

I saw they were much simpler to setup...

they work fine, having a domain makes permissions much better.

Also remote access can be an issue, Probably want something like a vpn for that.

ALso whats your backup plan?

@Electronics Wizardy I use almost 10TB. I am using cloud currently . Since I have the server stopped I was looking to save money and use the server. Or should I sell the server and buy a NAS?

You can easily setup the server as a nas, but The big issue is security and data loss issues. Id really try to stick with cloud if you can.

@Electronics Wizardy cloud has huge costs. I'm paying the lowest plan so I don't even have all documents on cloud to avoid huge pricing.. Would rather opt for a synology or a qnap in that case, no?

Yea, onsite can be cheaper, but make sure to add the costs on backup, and management of the hardware, and potential downtime.

Whats your backup plan?

the server has 4 bays I would put 2 bays as storage in raid backing up for 2 other hdd... @Electronics Wizardy

But what if the server was stolen or corruped and all the drives failed? You want a offsite backup, or atleast in a different server.

Qnap has a cloud access setup that will allow use of their file manager, download manager and several other ways to access to your server (the programs are on the Qnap). It will even work behind a double NAT.  I don't need to use it that much but you can access files and upload/download files remotely.

That might work for you and you might want to explore that route.

I tried cloud storage as the second (remote) backup, but it is too slow and expensive for me (40TB of data). Currently I have one Qnap rack mounted server that is backed up by a different Qnap rack mounted server and that works okay for us, though I would like offsite backup. I can expand both as need warrants.

Don't do backups on the same server as that's not really a backup. For purchased files, we load them onto DropBox and remove them after the time expires so that limits out expense on the cloud.
