Ryzen 5 3600

I am thinking of pairing a ryzen 5 3600 with an rx 5600 xt. Is an aftermarket cooler necessary of will the stock cooler do fine?

stock cooler is bearable, but there's also an incentive to get a new one.

No, but if you're going to OC it then I'll suggest you buy a aftermarket cooler from Cooler Master or Noctua or any such branded coolers. The Noctua NH-D15 is the best but it might look a little rusty.

Ok, I'm not looking to overclock so the stock cooler will do fine? I've not heard fantastic things about the stock cooler for the 3600 so I want to be sure.

No, the stock cooler is just enough if you run in stock speed.

AMD stock cooler is awesome.

As i said if you don't overclock, you won't need after market heatsink.

80 bucks can go somewhere important like a bigger SSD / HDD or memory.

you'll lose a bit of CPU boost clock due to the higher temperatures, for example going from 80C to 70C can give you extra 100MHz.

for games it would most likely run cooler than stress test as games punish the GPU more in general, though you would be able to hear the CPU fan hum in the background when the GPU fan doesnt spin up.

@gamesalex The stock wraith cooler is fine for gaming. However a decent 50 dollar aftermarket cooler will let the chip boost about a 100 MHz higher in most cases while being quieter. But that is highly subjective. For now just stick with the stock cooler and you will be fine. AMD's stock coolers are so much better than Intel's tiny flat push-pin terrors.

And that cooler comes with pre applied thermal paste so I don't need to purchase any more correct?

Yeah, the Wraith Stealth comes pre-applied with thermal paste.
