Upgrade or build new

Long story short after years of not having time to game (due to college) I can now again enjoy it and have time. My only problem is my current pc is possibly outdated. 

Processor: intel i5 4690k
Motherboard: Asus z97 

Graphics card: gtx 950 

ram: 8 gigs Ddr3 1600

Memory: 500g ssd and 2tb hd 

 

i know that certain things definitely need to be upgraded but I want to know if it’s worth the money to upgrade it or just build a new one?

Depends on how much money you have.  Haswell is getting old, but that i5-4690K is still pretty nice.  i7-4790K processors aren't all that expensive, either, and that would be even better.  I would absolutely upgrade the graphics card, though.  Perhaps to a GTX 1060 or something similar.

 

8GB RAM is starting to get a little small.  16GB is where you'd want to be.

I'd start upgrading, the benefit is you can do this over time, I would start with a new GPU, I recommend the RX 5700xt, it is great value, the 2060S, 2070S, and 2080S no longer make any sense in my opinion. What is your budget +location?

From there I would recommend an upgrade to AMD. Also, what PSU (specific model) do you have?

I'd upgrade the GPU first, then PSU, then the CPU + motherboard + RAM. This way you can spread out the cost, or if you are able to do so you can upgrade everything now.
