RAM speed or latency??

If I pick ram at 4000mghz the latency suffers but 3733 or 3600 the latency is better which way should I go clock speed or latency?

DDR4 4000 CL20 has the same latency as DDR4 3600 CL18. What kits are you looking at?

Then you should focus on getting the greatest ratio of frequency to CAS latency instead, among 3600MHz+ kits.

4000 and 3600 are not memory kits, they are memory speeds. Corsair Vengeance LPX is an example of a memory kit. I was just pointing out that you could end up getting a good latency on a 4000MHz kit, even if the CL number is higher.

If you wont do any manual timings tuning, this will be the best though you'll not run them at 4000MHz, instead double that of FCLK which you have to test what your CPU is good for (anywhere from 1800MHz to 1900MHz)

 

If you do tune timings manually, then the Samsung B-dies in the Patriot kit are the best choice.

It is important to remember that Cas Latency is measured in Cycles, not time, so a higher CL number is not bad, if you have the clock speed to make up for it.

 

The latency (in nano seconds) is Cas Latency in cycles / Command speed in Hz * 1000 noting that for DDR Ram, Command Speed = Clock Speed / 2

Using the example above from Fasauceome we get:

  CL19@4000Hz has latency of  19 / (4000/2) * 1000 = 9.5ns

  CL18@3600Hz has latency of  18 / (3600/2) * 1000 = 10ns

This makes the DDR4-4000 CL19 just that little bit faster

I run this kit with my 8700K. It's fast. That's all I have to say. 

And also, get the kit because that price is dirt cheap. They used to be 300$+

DDR4-4000 MHz is freaking high frequency.

I don't think many CPUs will be able to achieve that...unless you got super lucky in the 'Silicon Lottery.'

Especially on Ryzen; their Integrated Memory Controller is not a robust as Intel's ... IMO.

 

I'd stick with a lower frequency DRAM kit, and go for CL14 or CL16.

For an example, DDR4-3200 MHz with CL14 latency timings.

 

You also pay a premium for DRAM binned for DDR4-4000+ MHz.
