RX5700 Crashes - 99% Utilization

Good Evening,

 

I recently built my first PC using an AMD CPU/GPU and a B450 MoBo, specs of the build are further below.  At first i had some crashes while playing Anno 1800 but found out that most of them had to do with an issue with DirectX.  I recently started playing Destiny 2 on the PC and the game has crashed several times while playing, can't say an interval of time because sometimes it crashes after 15 minutes of playing and sometime i can play for hours before it crashes, this does happen about 30 to 40% of the time I've been playing.

 

In terms of troubleshooting, I've done the recommended actions i've seen here and in other forums (Re-installing windows and updating, do a clean GPU driver uninstall and install latest drivers etc.)  but those things don't seem to solve the issue.

 

I have noticed that after the game crashes the AMD tool and GPU-Z both register the GPU at 99% utilization even though there is no game running, when looking at the windows task manager i see that the performance of the GPU is super low though.

 

Any thoughts on what could be happening?  is there any other troubleshooting you guys can recommend?

 

I just want my system to be stable and so far i'm not sure if it is

@jobori78 welcome to the forums. have you updated your mobo? 3rd gen on b4xx usually requires an update. that could be the issue. windows not being activated shouldnt be an issue.

Yes, latest BIOS 3.50 installed on the MSI motherboard, just checked the support page from MSI and there is no updated version of BIOS other than that one.

i had your same issue, not sure if it's the same cause but it's exactly what happened to me, it could be a ram issue, in the bios did you enable xmp? if you did then what is your ram speed? 

 

for me i have 2x8gb patriot viper at 3200 mhz. i enabled xmp and the games kept crashing after 15 min of gameplay

 

i went back to the bios and reduced the speed to 3000 mhz and now it's stable

 

 

 

 

 

if this doesn't work, also download a program called memtest86, you have to use a usb flash drive for it. it tests your ram to see if it has any issues.

i did!  i used the only XMP profile available, it bumped up the speed to 3600Mhz (and memory is rated at 3600MHz), the thing is that that is the only XMP profile, if i use the default one it reduces the speed to 2333MHz if i'm not mistaken, is there a way (or is it even possible) to decrease the speed but not that much?

yes, i'm not sure how your specific bios works but yes, you can enable the xmp profile and set it manual configuration instead of auto, then just reduce the speed a bit and see if that works, i'm also going to see if i can up the voltage a bit and increase the speed if that works. but not sure if it will for you! let us know how it goes

@nonsense42    So i checked the mobo but i could not find a switch or something that would let me manually set the speed of the RAM, and the A-XMP turned off sets the RAM speed to 2133MHz, i sent out a trouble ticket to MSI to see if there was a way to create another XMP profile to set the ram speed to 3200MHz

 

i'll keep digging to see where it leads

If this is more of a troubleshooting step, might make sense to just temporarily disable XMP, see if your issue persists.

@mcammidge yes, i've disabled the a-xmp and currently running the memory at 2133MHz, haven't had any issues so far, but i've only played like 40 minutes, i'll do a heavier session in the evening to see how it goes.

 

but i would like to run my ram at the higher speeds if possible, so let's see how it goes

So i finally found the option on my motherboard to set the DRAM speed, i set the speed to 2933MHz to test it out for a while, if it's stable i may start to bump the speed little by little until it's starts crapping out.

 

i'll keep you posted
