Choosing components for my Home Server

Hey Guys,

I wanted to know if anyone could help me build a home server.

I have a few requirements,

  1. It must house either a Xeon or an EPYC processor
  2. It must have at least a decent 16GB Memory
  3. It must support at least 8 hard drive bays
  4. The components must have support in the next 5 years.
  5. RGB is not recommended.
  6. Must fit in the budget of 700 US Dollars exclusive of cost for harddrive/bootdrives
  7. Must have enough PCIe lanes for expansion.

I request anyone having any knowledge on the above to give their opinion. I am really desperate.

P.S: Removed Octane Memory [Was added by mistake] Regrets.

Good luck.

There's no Xeon that supports data drive acceleration with Optane.

Good luck. Xeons generally have this, the rest of the parts, not so much.

For his budget he's only going to get a Xeon that's already >5 years old in a used server...

Time for a reality check:

  • server main boards range from USD400-1000+
  • server RAM (ECC) starts at USD100
  • server processors start at USD1500 and can reach USD10,000, each! Some Intel systems require 2 to work at all.
  • server cases also start at the USD200 mark.
  • used servers can be had for less money on various marketplace sites, but it comes with a "buyer beware" warning

Given your question, I'd recommend you'd start with a Ryzen 1600AF system, as that would fit into your budget.

Sorry but you are not going to build a server with these specifications for <$700. Your only option for your budget is retired servers on eBay and they won't meet all of your other expectations.
