Will USB cable trasnfer data with the voltage line cut?

I am considering modifying a USB A to USB C cable so I can use Android Auto without my phone constantly going to 100% battery. If I cut the voltage line in the cable will data transfer still be possible?

Why? Battery charging has come a long way, and your phone is smart enough not to over-charge the cells.

You can cut the red wire (V+) to stop the charging, but the data lines require a ground connection to function so don't mess with the black wire and don't cut the data lines and re-solder them because they're really sensitive to impedance and they don't like it when you cut them, instead try to strip the sleeving from the middle (or wherever you want) and cut the red wire that way, to keep everything else intact.

Some devices will not detect that they are plugged if the red wire is cut.

Yeah I found that out the hard way, I cut the red wire and my phone didn't detect anything...
