I have a question about Motherboards.  In my original planned build, i was going with a Ryzen 5 3600 with a B450 Tomahawk Max board. (using a 5700XT or 2070 Super GPU).

Then I was watching videos and came across a video about future proofing (to a point that is).  This person suggested to use a budget x570 board instead.   The ones I have researched as suggested options are:

  • Gigabyte X570 AORUS Elite WiFi
  • ASUS X570 TUF Gaming Plus WiFi
  • ASRock X570 Steel Legend WiFi
  • MSI-X570-MPG-Gaming-Edge-WiFi

So my question is simple.  Should I try to stretch the budget to include an X570 budget board or stick with the B450 board.  I realize that the X570 support PCIE 4 where the Tomahawk Max does not.  My concern is upgrading my GPU into the B450 board that is PCIE v4 compatible but in a PCIe V3 slot thereby chocking down performance.   Or is it more realistic that in a couple of years when I want to replace my GPU that I would probably want to replace my Motherboard as well.

Thoughts?

out of those this is the best

out of those, this is the worst.

current gen GPUs don't really saturate pcie 3, so they don't benefit from pcie 4 slots.

future gen might, no one knows.

an asus tuxf x570 board can easily run a 3900x or 3950x, and is likely to as easily run 4000 series ryzen cpus with 16 cores, so I guess, if you have the budget for it, it's a good investment.

having said that, the tomahawk can also run the 3900x and there would be no reason to not work with 4000 series. but yes, it lacks pcie 4. but so do all intel platforms to date.

The TUF X570 is by far the best value X570 board on the market. Out of those I'd get that if you intend to upgrade to say a 4900X 12-core

I am not sure what to do to be honest.   I haven't been in PC gaming in 20 years (switching from consoles back to PC).   So this will be a new build for me.

What my concern was about using a B450 motherboard and not being able to upgrade the GPU because of no PCIe v4 slot for the newer GPUs.   I am sure the B450 Tomahawk board could handle a 4600 cpu.  This system will primarily be a gaming PC (no video editing at this time).

Am I over thinking this?  What is the typical upgrade cycle for PCs these days?

This really depends on what you consider upgrading to, I hate the f-word (future proofing). Because in this scenario the X570 really gets you nothing over a B450 other than some enhanced cooling, which with a 3600 does not matter, and the only real gain is PCIe 4.0 which at the moment is not even of use. So outside if maybe 1 gen of CPU upgrades an 1 gen on GPU upgrades do you plan on keeping the system long term?, AM4 launches will likely end after the next gen of CPU's anyways so if you are planning on upgrading in a year or two maybe it is worth it. But I would say it is likely not.

I plan on 3-4 year upgrades (that is the plan).  So f-word in my case really isn't a justifiable scenario.

I believe I am overthinking this whole thing.   The basic build with either a 5700XT or 2070 Super should last me 3 years of gaming and then I can see where the market went and rebuilt accordingly.  I think that is the better approach for someone just getting back into PC gaming.

Thoughts?

Yeah like if you upgrade in 3-4 years you are likely stuck with used 4th gen Ryzen options, and the GPU options are honestly completely unknown at this point, thus it is impossible to predict the future which is why I am not a fan of the term 'Future Proofing'.

I think you are over-thinking as well. Just get a solid B450 motherboard, your 57800xt/2070S, and don't worry about what happens down the road, for the time being you will have a solid gaming PC and you aren't totally limited with the AM4 platform anyways. Spending more on parts that won't even necessarily ever benefit you in the future, or not at all right now is pointless in my opinion.

Honestly, if you have the budget, grab the TUF X570 and enjoy some high end features and a better BIOS than the B450

I picked the B450 tomahawk max because it gets great reviews and a lot of build videos use it.   What "high end" features does the TUF X570 have to justify the upgrade.

Better BIOS, better memory over locking better VRMs, PCIe 4.0 for next gen GPUs and Storage, more IO and generally superior build quality

Thanks.  I will have to see if I can stretch the build to include it.  I have to wait until my paycheck this Friday to get the final budget amount, then I will start buying the parts.

The PCIe 4.0 is not worth it for now but it might be in the future, I personally made a build with a X570 Pro4, not only with that in mind but mostly because of better memory overclocking.

Interesting, overclocking is not really on my list of priorities right now being a new PC gamer.   I just want a solid low noise PC, so I am using the Fractal Meshify C and an aftermarket CPU cooler.

Fair point.   It all depends on my final budget numbers.

I keep adjusting my build as I learn more and deciding on what I should do depending on the final budget.  I have like 5 slightly different builds right now.  Some with better PSU/Memory, another with a better Motherboard and then the lowest cost that I am sure I can afford.

I really do appreciate all the advise/tips/information provided and take it all into account.
