What camera would you get for 4k video? (about 2000$)

So I'm looking for a 4k camera and the budget is around 2000€ and should include everything that I need for normal use (basic lens (like 100€ for canon 50mm 200 for nikon , extra batteries if needed, adapters/speedboosters)). I don't have much experience and there are just so many similar options on the market. I'd like your opinion on the matter.

It would mostly be used for indoor, studio-like setup, mostly on a tripod, but maybe some handheld b-roll also. I might want to shoot different stuff late on.

Some of the cameras I've been looking at:

Z6,  - looks good, but is not really great at anything?

EOS R/RP,  - hate the crop, I'm trying to avoid it because it's already causing problems on the DSLR that we use now. Like the skin tones

A7III - I think I'd like to avoid this one because I really don't like the look of it. I'm a video editor and I've worked with A7S and A7III footage before and I have always hated it - especially the skin tones

Lumix S1,

XT3/4, - I hear some good stuff about the XT-4 what do you think

Pocket 4k - Edited a project that was shot on it and I was very impressed. At work we also have the Ursa mini 4,6K G2 and I think they both look absolutely great, but I am worried that the cost of extra add-ons that I would have to purchase would somewhat negate it's beautiful footage. And it can't really take stills and that would mean I would need to keep the current camera with me all the time.

okay so your work has a USRA mini with what mount? because if you can borrow stuff form them and its EF mount then then that will rule out other cameras.

With EF and PL mount, but I'd need to borrow the camera at least once a week and it's just too much scheduling and since it would be my brother who'd use the camera the most, he says he'd feel obligated to pay something for renting it so often. It also requires more skill and knowledge to operate and we are trying to avoid that.

okay, the question was mostly around glass.

EOS R to get a not horribly cropped will need a speed booster too.

EOS Rp also is an option. again a speed booster will widen

EOS R has better options like log and dual pixel AF in 4k over the EOS Rp

90D has dual pixel af and uncroped 4k but no log.

Pocket 4k+ metabones speed booster

pocket is great for video only, and that assumes you got some plan for focus.

90D is likely the best overall.

spend some money on 2-4 extra batteries, good SD cards, good audio system and maybe a nice tripod

Thanks, some great new info that i missed somehow (that 90d and Rp don't have log).

Thanks I know all that, I've got a fast enough 128GB SD card for most cameras, but the Z6 uses XQD and like CFast it's quite expensive. For the pocket I'd get a T5 ssd anyway since we would use it statically mostly. But Then I'd probably have to get the cage and that port protector... Also it has a mini XLR port so we'd have to change our microphone  / or get an adapter of some kind.

Did the pocket get any continuous AF firmware updates and is it any good? If I remember correctly it only had single AF.

Do you have any tripod suggestions? I was looking at one that looked quite good and sturdy video tripod for around 180$, but the reviews are not great. And for that price I mostly found just light (travel) tripods like the manfrotto befree. I was thinking I could get the Manfrotto MVH500AH fluid head and some other legs, but I had trouble finding something a bit heavier.

The pocket 4K also has 3.5mm in.
cage is super nice.
I run generic cages on my canon SL2 and 90D
No updated auto focus as far as I remember but I haven’t read up on it’s firmware updates.

SLIK has some decent ones. Manfroto and a few others make really nice ones.

sub 200$ will probably be a slik

Slik 504QF-II Tripod System

im going to pick up a used one soon. Likely not the best but should be better than some of the cheaper ones by magnus

now at line 250 you got stuff like the Manfrotto MT190X3 3-Section Aluminum Tripod with MVH500AH Fluid Head Hybrid Video Kit

i don’t know how the 2 compare. Unfortunately I’m no longer around my high school so I couldn’t test that head vs the SLIK one.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'll be the Panasonic guy, what about the GH5? If you are going to be handheld shooting it's got just about the best image stabilization you are going to get. Autofocus is no good, but I just manual focus most of my shots. You also don't get the depth of field of a full frame camera but the versaility of adapting to whatever lenses you want (except e-mount I think). You do get DCI 4k 4:2:2 10-bit up to 30fps internal. You can do 4k/60 at 8-bit internal. But pair it with a Ninja V and you can external record to SSDs at 10-bit 60fps.

If Full frame is important to you Id be looking at the Z6. Though to get Log out of it you have to external record I believe. I external record anyway because I just prefer ProRes for editing and SSDs for the Atomos are dirt cheap compared to even SD cards. Does it do any one thing amazing? No. But it does everything well from everything I have seen. Good color, good IBIS, FF 4k, and adaptable to F mount lenses which there are a lot of.

If you just want to pick up a camera, not worry about any add on stuff, and use a good 4k Full Frame, I'd be looking at the Sony A7III. But you are giving up 4:2:2 10-bit, which if you are color grading a fair amount can really matter.
