Thought about a possible advanced fan feature

On the off chance there’s someone reading this that actually makes PSUs, I had a thought for adding “value” to high end PSUs.  It might be a bad one. 
 

One thing that has changed in modern vs old PSUs is they’re not as good for case venting as they used to be.  Advanced fan features make them unreliable for cooling.  Once upon a time I had a PSU that had a manual control for PSU fan speed.  Kind of a stupid feature, but what it would do for some cases is allow the PSU to be flipped and used as case venting.  Not a lot of people would do it, and it effectively lobotomizes all that advanced heat control, but there are a few people who might find it handy.  Kind of a dumb feature perhaps, but high end PCs have lots of dumb features these days. It would make it more expensive.  Not normally a positive, but one never knows.

you can do that now. the psu fan is intake to so if you have a bottom mounted psu you turn it upside down. and if its top mounted you install it normally. The fan will intake air and push it out the back

True but it doesn’t do it reliably because there’s often no way to leave the fan on.  It only runs when the PSU heats up.  This is why I say “not as good” rather than “doesn’t”

True. with high end psus they dont turn on always. but cheaper ones are on all the time.

 

Of course if you can afford a high end psu where the fan only cuts on when needed....id imagine you can probably just buy an exhaust fan.

Ugh.  “Come into our rgb ecosystem young tender juicy one”.  This is the problem with ideas like this.  They get turned to ugly.  I was afraid it might be a bad idea.

The ' i ' series PSU's from Corsair allow something similar to what you are describing (RMi, HXi, AXi), the have pre-set fan options to choose form and also provide voltage monitoring, this is done through their Corsair Link software. However, the simple matter of the fact is that most people don't care to pay a price premium for this feature. I had an RMi once, after a year I decided to check it out, it was nothing special, I never used the feature again.

iCUE is Corsairs primary RGB control software, Corsair Link is simply their hardware control application, in fact Corsair Link existed looooong before RGB was even a thing.
