Don't bother coding. Use something that's made already to avoid any security/privacy issues. Something like Nextcloud.

^ Yep. There's far too many services that are free/very cheap to make actually programming something way too inefficient.

Please do not try to build a system yourself where you share your private data with your friends and family.

There are plenty of open source solutions to host your own cloud service similar to Google Drive etc. The most popular of them is NextcloudThe software itself is free and open-source, you just need a place to host it.

Some hosting providers offer managed Nextcloud solutions where you're just a user, you don't need to worry about configuring the software at all. Another option is getting your own virtual server/root server, there are plenty of tutorials how to install Nextcloud available. Which option you choose is up to you and depends on how confident you feel working with configuration files, databases and linux.

Check out this thread.

I’m working on this exact problem. Hopefully we get it figured out. I want the same thing,  just upload my photos from my phone and access them from anywhere on my own private server.

What @MoVo didn't mention is that there exists Nextcloud-apps for iPhones and Androids and the app makes it easy to upload your photos and videos to your Nextcloud-server. You can even configure it to automatically upload any pictures and videos you take, if you like.
