bad capactiers

So i was playing around with my old pentium 4 3.4 prescott motherboard

So i tried to turn it off with a screwdriver on the panel header ive done it before on other motherboards and while i was

one of the capacitors crackled and smoked and smelled of burning plastic

did  i short out the mobo or is my board bad

the board also has a broken IDE controller and the cpu fan is always running at full speed

Graphics card is fried as well

that was before the cap smoked

What you described sounds like a short. The cap doesn't look popped though. See if it turns on. And it's spelled capacitor*

I meant as in the wrong things had a connection to each other causing the caps to go nuts.

This. If you've never shorted out a header you haven't gotten far in your life yet. :D As for the bad cap I really have no idea, I think it's safe to say that only you know if you did something wrong or not.

They literally cost maybe a nickel a piece? Not sure about the prices in NZ but it can't be too high?
