Current CPU

LeandroMors

So my Friend has a considerably older computer, he is need of an upgrade but doesn't want to brake the bank per-say. Now this sounds like a run of the mill "Budget PC," but here's the catch. He wants to skimp out on all the parts except for the graphics card, in which he already bought a 1080Ti but doesn't want to spend money on anything else. His current specs are:

AMD FX-6300 (3.5Ghz)

Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 R2

Corsair 16GB DDR3 1333Mhz

Gigabyte GTX 750ti (before the 1080Ti)

2TB 5600 RPM WD Blue (It's almost 5 years old)

Antec ATX VSK4000E-U3 Computer Case in Red

500W EVGA PSU Bronze

I don't know what to build him without bottle-necking the computer entirely

Interesting strategy..

Anyways, he should be looking into replacing this platform for something newer. For example Ryzen 5 1600 AF or 3600 + 16GB of 3200-3600Mhz + a B450 board (like a Gaming Plus) would do good.

What specific PSU is that, by the way? EVGA B2, BQ, BR, etc.?

EDIT: oh and he should get an SSD too.

Noticing there is no SSD there.   The HD may start to go bad soon as well.  I would say an lowball SSD with cache, and be prepared for the HD to die.

Motherboard is am3.  Only way to upgrade that is full cpu/mobo/memory swap.  Would still want the SSD though.

Hes sort of got half a point with the fx6300.  Its “6 core” bulldozer.  Arguably barely adequate for modern gaming.  30% slower than 4/8s from 5 years ago.  Its not doing his current gpu justice.  It’s going to need to be updated eventually.

The lowball speed boost is the SSD though.  More bang/buck there.  That could be transferred to a new machine along with the GPU.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.
