Hey,

I need to build a server mostly used to run virtual computers running cpu-demanding games (no graphic cards)

I'd like something cheap, able to handle has much instances as possible.

So I looked for AMD Opterons 6376/6378. Those 16-Cores CPUs looks amazing on specs, but they might run slower than Intel X5670 xeons...

Taking in consideration that Opterons can possibly get OCed at >4Ghz on 16 cores, ans that I can get them at $17 each... What should I do ?

- Opteron 6378 - $17 - 16 Cores no HT

- Xeon X5670 - $19 - 6 Cores HT

I'll get both two of em, but if I go Intel I won't be able to OC any of those Xeons.

Thanks I really need your help and your knowledge guys ?

If you want performance, you look at more expensive CPUs. If you want cheap, you're free to go for Opterons and then have slow-ass performance even when overclocked.

So what is a good perf/price ratio for a personnal game server ?

Those Opterons are bad and don't have as much performance as the numbers would make you believe. An x5670 is a good choice, and you can actually overclock those if you have a board that supports that. I've heard that the x5675 might be binned because people have had higher clocks with those

Thank you.

I won't be able to overclock two X5670 as there are only a few mobo able to do it on dual CPU, and those are much more expensive. But i'll go for it !

the opterons are pretty poor, they're similar to the FX8300 etc, and the 16 core versions arent true 16 core chips, they're using the bulldozer modules.

The x5670 is a 6 core chip though? not 8 core...

I'm not convinced either of these are upto the job of "CPU Demanding Games", though i've no idea what that actually means :P
