So i'm replacing my old HDD with a new one, and was wondering while i transfer the old files to the new drive, is it safe just plugging in the new one and puttiing it on the desk while it transfers and then remove the old one and put the new one in? Basically just having the new one on the table during the time i transfer the files

That would be no problem, it's usually just recommended to have it mounted in your PC, so it doen't make too much noise.
