I'm building an office server

mantasdi

Hello!

I'll be building an office server and it would be amazing if you, guys, could help me out with the hardware choices which I'm not sure of.

First purpose:
We have 1TB of data and growing. Mostly pictures. I want to put in 2x2TB HDD drives and connect them with RAID1 on top of a ZFS filesystem for better data security. The system itself will be stored on an SSD 128-512GB drive. I want to have a possibility to scale the amount of data drives in the future if we get more data or decide to use RAID10.

The second purpose of the server - it will hold a nodeJS WEB application with mongoDB(20Gb of data) that will be used by 6 people at once at most.

I believe it would be a good thing if the motherboard would have 1Gbit/s LAN adapter.

Please, provide me with any recommendations for motherboards, CPUs, power supplies or anything else you see worth mentioning. I'd like to keep the overall build budget below 2000€, but any offers are interesting anyway.

Thank you!

this screams little 4 or 5 bay nas with a quad core cpu and 8 or 16gb of ram.

AS5304T

for 2k you've got lots of options.

you could build a 4U server based around a 24 or 36 drive case with a ASROCK rack X470D4U2-2T or X470D4U. a 2600 or 2700, 32gb of ECC ram. Start with 6 NAS or server drives.

buy a barebones server, asrock and gigabyte along with a few other brands have some her that you could have running for 2k.

Good luck, Have fun, Build PC, and have a last gen console for use once a year. I should answer most of the time between 9 to 3 PST

Thank you! AS5304T sounds like a really nice option to me, but from the reviews I can see that it comes with some kind of OS/control system already. Would I be able to install Debian on it without loosing the functionality of some parts of the hardware?

You could but read up a little more on the software. I think you should be able to do everything you want on this box.

if it can’t you could but idk what you would lose

I'd personally just pick up a second hand 'actual server' for that kind of use case. You get additional benefits such as iDRAC, PSU redundancy, higher capacity RAM, multi sockets, hardware RAID w/ hot swap, no cooling variables, better hypervisor support, consolidated rack mount form factor, etc.

For 2k you could even buy new.

PC : 3600 · Crosshair VI WiFi · 2x16GB RGB 3200 · 1080Ti SC2 · 1TB WD SN750 · EVGA 1600G2 · Define C
