Bro those are fibre channel modules.

Hello, so like 6 months ago i was getting some help on here but that thread died so im making a new one! So i have a Catalyst 4948-10GE and i got the x2 modules, a compatible transceiver and a fiber cable. But the thing is it just... doesn't work. Like nothing, computer shows no networks, and the little light on the switch next to the x2 isn't on. Is there something in the terminal i need to do to get it to work?

Probably:

”int x/x/x” (replace with port number as shown in “show int brief” or “show int status”)
“no shutdown”

Can you elaborate a little more? I'm not very good with the Cisco terminal lol

Yah, the ports are (iirc) shutdown by default. You need a console cable to configure it.

If you can get into the terminal I can walk you through basic setup.

From the terminal you should be at the global prompt:

Switch>

From here do the following:

enable

show ip interface brief

This will give you a list of interfaces, hit enter to scroll through them or space. You're looking for TenGigabitEthernet

From there do:

conf t

interface Te[whatever/whatever/whatever]

no shut

end

copy r s

Figure out (from the output of “show ip int brief”) what the number of the port you want to change is. It will be something like Te1/2/2 (the first number is the switch index, since you only have a single switch of this type in this “stack”, it will be 1. The second number is the module or slot - the main 48 ports will be /1/, the first module slot will be /2/, etc. The third number is the port within that group of ports / module.)

Ok so i got that far, now the guy above said to do

-no shut

-end

-copy r s

which i did, then i power cycled it, and it didn't do anything (that i could see)

You don't need to power cycle it when making changes.

Did you wipe the config or are you trying to use whatever leftover one was on there?

show inventory

show vlan

show int status

show log

show interface te1/1/1 transceiver

You should be able to see the modules in inventory.  What fiber cable are you using?  What transceiver are you using?  Did you attempt to 'roll' the pair so RX<>TX are flipped?

Copy the output of those commands into the forum so we can help you more easily. You can use the Spoiler (eye) function to hide the text

Spoiler

Like this

When using fiber connections, sometimes it is necessary to manually swap the two fibers at one end or the other so that the two transmitters aren’t just firing light at each other. The fiber patch cable should have either a color flag (a small yellow or white ring usually) or tiny letters (A and B) on each strand. If yellow or A or whatever is on the left at one end, it should be on the right at the other end. If in doubt, show us photos of the patch cable.

What is the fiber module on the other side (in the computer or whatever)? And what fiber patch cable are you using?

OK so that all looks compatible. Have you tried swapping the right and left fiber at one end? You’ll have to take off the clip that holds them in a certain orientation. It’s probably easier to do that on the SC end (larger connectors).

Ok i swapped the ends, still nothing   : /

Is there anything else i need to do to get it to work?

Could my cable maybe be damaged?

Look at “show int te1/49 transceiver” and “show int te1/50 transceiver” again, and check the “Optical RX Power”. If its around -20 or lower, then it basically isn’t receiving any light from the other end (which could have several causes including the transmitter at the other end, the cable, or a polarity mismatch which we should have just tested for by swapping one end around).

What transceiver do you have in the switch itself?

The Voltage is weird but the TX and RX power look good

Hmmm, ok, that should work just fine then.

Do a "show ip int bri | i Te" and a "show run int Te1/49" and "show run int Te1/50"

So the terminal was being weird and nothing was happening, so i powercycled the switch to see if that would fix it and now it wont turn on. Plug it in and just nothing. No lights, can't hear any fans (although it is pretty loud where all my servers are)

Do you feel any air directly behind the switch by chance?
