heatsink fan ramps up alot

recently installed an AMD quad core processor, used the same heatsink that tower came with for an AMD dual core processor.... but the fan keeps kicking in into overdrive... why ? not enough thermal paste ?

Check your temps, we can't possibly come up with a rationale, fan speed is directly related to CPU temps.

thank you...

you can try re mounting with new thermal paste, or get a bigger cooler if the sound bothers you

Fan spins up at high temp from Cpu Load.... Idle temp is null to the situation.

Idle doesn't matter, you need to load up the CPU to check the maximum temps, I suggest Cinebench R20 for a quick test.

Great thank you.

I am assuming you have the all aluminum heat sink?

The one you want to look for that will fit your tower is the AMD heat pipe cooler.

I'll display a picture here for you, this will run the Cpu much much cooler especially if you have integrated graphics in use.

Also used on Opteron the same era. ;)

And I took my Wraith apart upgraded the fan to Delta. The heat sink is nearly still identical.

You won't need a liquid cooler. Like a single 120 rad would be not better than the heat pipe cooler.

Maybe someone has one laying around they could send you free. Dime a dozen.

running cinebench now, temp is between 65 and 70C

At max operating temp.

Cpu specs are

4.2ghz at 100w rated 74c TJmax.

Full fan speed at 60c I believe the board is running it.

Indeed on a short haul.

Just use it normally and upgrade the heat sink there. You'll have a quieter PC then.
