You create the RAID before installing the OS. Note that Windows might need you to supply additional drivers during install so it can see the RAID array.

No, storage spaces is a windows feature that makes software RAID easy.

might as well just do the RAID on the pool the VMs reside on, that makes it unnecessary to have any other RAID in place anywhere else.

Honestly, I am not a raid expert and I don't know how all this works with VM's etc. Basically, I want to clone my OS drive so if something happens I will have a backup I can use until I get a new SSD and recreate the cloned drive for future safety

But what is the OS drive here? Is that the Unraid OS drive or are we talking the OS drive of the VM running on top pf Unraid. That’s all I’m asking.
