9900k

I recently built a new pc because I got a 9900k. Unfortunately, I am still using a 1060 but I am planning on getting a new nvidia card later this year, probably 3070 super if that's what it's called. When I got the 9900k, I got a hyper 212 evo because I knew that I was going to be bottlenecked by the CPU. I realize that I am going to have to upgrade the cooler to overclock the 9900k. I have been debating between the nh-d15 and the x72/62. I have read so many mixed suggestions online regarding performance. I am planning on gaming on the cpu, if that helps at all. What would you suggest I get?

Specs:

275r Airflow

9900k

Aorus Pro wifi x390

16gb 3600mhz gskill c16

1060 6gb SSC evga

750x Power Supply corsair

This is copied over from Air Cooling because no one answered my question and wasn't sure if there was a way to switch sections.

The kraken will be cooler but the D15 will be quieter, i would go for the 62 since it has similar performance to the 72 just quieter

THIS IS MY SIGNATURE

Honestly is it really worth it to overclock my 9900k? I realize that it will give me more performance but is the improvement worth going out and spending $100 on a cooler? I'm getting a new gpu this year but idk.

Before replacing your cooler I would do a negative voltage offset (around -.015-.02) on your core voltage and then try overclocking with your existing cooler. I’ve done that on my 9700k and have it running at ~78c max at 4.8ghz all core on a silent 120mm AIO.

Dude you keep telling people, including myself not to OC, people specifically buy unlocked parts to be able to have a go at overclocking and want to have a go. Solving any issues is part of the fun.

@Coopermar I'm having some difficulty getting stable on a 360mm AIO mostly down to tests in synthetic benchmarks. Yes it is worth OC'ing your 9900k I've seen a good increase in average FPS with better 1% lows in most games I'm playing... Plus an almost 600 point increase over stock config in cinebench R20... I've not won the silicon lottery though and have a pretty high vcore at 1.35v to get stable producing a heck ton of heat. You might be luckier than me though!

Stock voltage with MCE often gets pretty high. Manual overclocking lets you get way better thermals overall, and can also result in higher clock speeds. It's not even that hard to type manual voltages in yourself and run a couple tests for stability.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

LOL Dude! That high pitched whistling sound you keep hearing is the point you keep missing, flying about at break neck speeds ? I'm not sure if you don't get what I mean by a 1%low in games or not. In regards to any FPS increases it may not make you a better gamer but it can make your experiences far more enjoyable. Do you have 9900k envy or something?

Personally after having several AIO's over the years I honestly think in future I'd either go high end air or a custom loop, I've found them to just be too problematic over the years with pump failures, trapped air and even a leak on two separate occasions. A custom loop while more expensive, configured properly will smash even the biggest high end AIO's in terms of cooling hands down.

Just go with any cooler you want.

Any good quality AIO 240mm/280mm/360mm will all work well with the 9900K.

NH-D15 or BQ DRP4 will also work very well.

It usually depends on what cooler will fit in your case, e.g. my Lian Li case will not fit a big air-cooler so I choose a 360mm AIO from Corsair.

For a gaming PC the 9900K will give you fantastic performance regardless if you overclock it or keep it on stock settings.

My 9900K is overclocked to 5.1ghz but compared to the stock turbo of 4.7ghz so you will not notice significant difference while gaming.

To me overclocking is something you do because it is fun ?.

Got my 9900k at 5.1 and used to have a corsair h100i pro but swapped to a NH-D15.

Can say the noctua is much quieter then the aio at the same temps (60c).

For use with your current cooler, you should try to manage an overclock of like 4.6 all cores. If you're lucky with that chip, you can pull off some fairly low core voltages and keep temps in check. Otherwise stock operating is what you're looking at with the 212 Evo, and expensive cooling is only worth it if you like to overclock.

Do you think it's worth it to overclock? What performance difference am I going to see going from 4.7-5 or 5.1? Right now it boosts to 4.7(at stock) and the highest temps I get are around 55ish. I am planning on getting the 3070 super (if that's what it's called) or the 3080 when it comes out. If the performance gained worth spending $100 on a cooler? (in your opinion)

Honestly, overclocking is more for fun than any real performance gains. The 5 core turbo of 4.7 is what you'd be seeing most of the time at stock, if you're talking gaming. Getting decent temps at that performance level is pretty good overall, so investing in a higher end air cooler is not really gonna be getting you good value for your dollar.

Are you going to OC? For stock and just gaming NH-D15 is more than enough. Me personally I wanted at least an all core 5GHz and NH-D15 just couldn't keep the CPU blow 90C+ (I do video encoding). So I got an NZXT x72 and it was 5C-10C cooler than the NH-D15.
