I ordered a new PC from memory express a bit ago and have been waiting for it to arrive. Today I received an email from them asking me for extra info for verification such as government issued ID and a bill of some sort (phone bill for example)

This is the first time I have ordered something from memory express, is this par for the course with them? Or is this a red flag that I should be careful about?

Since its with email, I would call them. Or visit store if thats option.

Such things could be normal if you are new customer for them and ordering something really expensive. Thats stores way to verify that you are real person and truly willing/able to pay for custom order. As after PC is built, they will lose money if you aren't gonna buy it.

Wouldnt he pay for it before it was even shipped though?

Ive never shopped at memory express (i dont even think they are in the states). But ive never had a retailer ask for a picture of my id and a picture of a bill.

Tbh i probably wouldnt shop at a retailer who asked for that.

For full custom system there's few hours worth of planning before anything is paid. That's why store's rather sell base where you can change part or few.

But if  hes waiting for it to be delivered then clearly it has already been planed out/paid for.

And looking at memory express website you just use an online configurator to plan out specs.

Even if they didnt have the online configurator i have a hard time believing a retailer would be taking money during the planning period. Who would pay before even deciding on the specs when basically every other retailer doesnt charge for that?

So why not just contact and ask what it is about? Why are you so forced on this?

Im not the one they are asking for the info.

Idk what you mean by "forced on this" im just thinking outloud. You know...having a discussion on a discussion forum.

You brought up a point that didnt make sense to me. So i replied to get more info to see if there was something i was not taking in to consideration.

I was giving an example of situation where they could ask for such details. I don't live in Canada and have no idea whats the practice with expensive custom orders. So I gave example about where I thought they might acquire verification of persons identity. And I also know that in here you can make orders without paying first, like paying only after you received order.

I have ordered such things and I never had anyone want an email with my ID? there is usually a receipt number that has an address attached to it. Maybe when you pick up the package you need a photo id for pickup... Sounds strange but I guess I never ordered from Memory express so they could be different but still seems strange. What would they need an id picture for lol. Basic IT to be better safe than sorry.
