Used $90-$110 RX 480, a better $40-$50 PSU and another 8Gb stick of ram used for $20 and presto a cheap gaming pc, if everything else works.

If you only browse the internet and check emails that should do it. If you are into gaming, 3d design, photoshop, video editing, rendering and so on start from scratch.

I want to be able to play Fallout 4 and potential Elder Scrolls VI.

 

The fam will probably get into photo editing in the near future as well.

Is craigslist the only fate for these components? 

jut put a rx 470 and frag , there are some offers for 50$ it has 2000 shaders and even a litle of VR. no brainer i think.

It’s enough for fallout 4 @1080p with a card.  I dunno about elder scrolls.

 

youve got basically just a populated motherboard and low power PSU though.  Getting it up and running is going to cost some money.

 

The question becomes how much money is available to get the thing off the ground?

 

To do that it needs:

storage

a GPU

A case (?) one can theoretically live without a case but it’s a big big mess

monitor

keyboard

mouse

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I recommend a used 1660 or something off ebay or *shudders*, Wish...

A better PSU ready for future upgrades (500W+)
Chuck in a 500gb SSD, should last you fine if you are just storing a few files, programs and games on there.
Maybe upgrade RAM to some faster 16GB set.

Depends on what you're using it for. Gaming? Web browsing PC for mom and pop with some Office applications in the side?

 

As is. The power supply needs an upgrade.  You can also add an additional stick of 8GB of RAM to make use of dual channel. Also an SSD.

He mentioned fallout 4 (older aaa game) and elder scrolls 6 (not yet released aaa game). For non-gaming standard stuff a GPU is not even needed.  The intel cpu has a low end gpu inside it which should be enough for non gaming tasks.  If no discrete gpu is used and gaming is abandoned the PSU probably doesn’t even need to be upgraded.  Just add storage, peripherals and a case.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.
