That really comes down to how long you are willing to wait. It could be a minute before the new cards launch and you may get tired of waiting, or maybe you get one now and in a few months the new cards drop and you will have wished you waited. If you are willing to wait I would say start buying different parts now hunting for deals, those new cards won't be cheap, and get the gpu last. If you don't want to wait full send and get everything now. One other thing to keep in mind is that when new cards come out they releases the higher end, and more expensive, XX70 and XX80 cards first a few months before the lower end, and usually they sell out pretty quick and can be hard to find

I would say don't even bother with waiting if you're not willing to spend at least $500 on the gpu, since Nvidia usually releases 70 series and 80 series cards first. And I sure as hell am not expecting any big price breaks from Nvidia after RTX 2070 launched at $550 to $600.

And no one knows if there are even any Ampere gaming gpus coming, as the only thing that seems solid so far is the GA100 HPC chip. Ampere could end like Volta was: only for HPC, no gaming cards.

I mean I'm choosing to wait since I don't like the thought of paying $540 for a 2070 Super that might just edge out the next gen consoles. But really the only PC games I want to play right now are Control and Sekiro so I can wait on those two since I have quite a few console games I'm playing this year anyways. Especially with Cyberpunk and Dying Light 2 both getting delayed. If those two were still coming in April I'd be singing a way different tune.

really i'd like to build a computer that can play games at 1440p high/ ultra settings and ideally something i wouldnt have to upgrade for at least 2 years. thats why im wondering if waiting is worth it or if the 2080 cards will still be good in 2022ish

All I can say is that despite building a new PC at Christmas, I am absolutely waiting for the new GPUs to come out. To me it doesn't make sense to buy the last gen cards 3-6 months before the next gen cards release, especially since I am targeting the upper high end GPUs.  However, if I was looking to spend around $400-$500, honestly I probably would have just went ahead and picked up a 5700XT. The price to performance on the card is very good and I don't really think your going to get much better in the price range just because you wait 6 months.

I'm looking to build a new computer but I heard that the nvidia 3000 series of gpu's may be coming out this year. My question is do you guys think they're worth waiting for or should i just go with the 2000 series.

Hm waiting should be good, becuase the 3000 series 3060-3080ti should preform somewhat better, and the preformance leap should be larger than the 1080ti-2080ti and ect, but this is just rumors right now. Probs with a 2070s+ you could get pretty nice settings for at least 2 years, but the new series comes out in like ... 6 months? I think it's worth the wait. AMD is also coming out with an high-preformance likely ray tracing capible card by about that time as well, but It will probably be for people who want price to preformance, so some corners may be cut, and they might not preform as well as the 3000 series. On a side note, the 3000 series should have a $100 drop in price compared to last year's (ish) 2000 series, and might have more price cuts if AMD truns out to be competitive.

I am NOT a professional and a lot of the time what I'm saying is based on limited knowledge and experience. I'm going to be incorrect at times.
