They are (simply put) bruteforcing as many scrypt/sha265(sha265()) hashes as they can, and the results get sent back to the pool.

Many of the miners are open source, so you can see for yourself how they work. Here is cgminer:

You are completing a proof-of-work algorithm. Very hard to solve, but easy to prove a correct answer. This is done by guessing as quickly as possible until an answer is found. The difficulty scales with the network to ensure solutions are not being provided quicker, or slower than pre-determined rates in the software.

Bitcoin uses hashcash for proof of work.

Read the white paper to learn more about how transactions and blocks are verified then added to the chain. Everyone should read the white paper; You don't need to understand it all, just read then ask specific questions.

Here's a write up on how it works in easier to understand layman's terms.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Users cannot, and will not securely manage key material. Most users can't and the ones that can, wont.

Ask me about Bitcoin, Litecoin, Crypto-Currencies, and/or Mining them.
