So I wanna make a wired connection from my router to 2 PCs on the other end of my apartment. I will be using cables, switches and connectors bellow. I made LAN cables at school before but I don't really know much about them. I know what crossover straight-through Cat5e and those things are. But I don't know if this setup will work.

Will be using:

Switch: https://www.links.hr/hr/switch-tp-link-tl-sg1005d-10-100-1000-mbps-5-port-053506182

Cable: https://www.links.hr/hr/kabel-intellinet-patch-cat5e-u-utp-sivi-20m-204500033 (and 2x 5m types of the same cable)

Connectors: https://www.links.hr/hr/utp-konektor-intellinet-cat5e-rj-45-kom-053512425

Tnx for reading and replies :)

Relatively new to DIY networking? That should work fine:

Modem -> Router -> Switch -> PC1 & PC2 (using 2 cables from the switch)

Yea I work in packet-tracer in school I know how to connect them I just wonder if the cables are all right because at school we had square connectors and the cables I want to buy look weird although they're both cat5e

Thank you for your response

No need for the connectors, the cable comes pre-terminated already but otherwise you're good to go.

Well hold on there. Maybe he wants to lop the ends off and put his own on (for what possible reason I don't know) :P

Personally I don't like the cables with injection molded plastic around the connectors. Just a personal distaste. I just prefer the finish of a hand terminated cable with a self-installed cover to protect the cable from getting caught on other cables.

Square connectors? Although the RJ-45 connector does come in different versions to accommodate cable of different gauges and sleeve thicknesses/types they're all basically rectangular.

Unless you're talking about RJ-11. They're kind of square.

Yea I mean rectangular but if looked at from the front the ones from school looked rectangular these ones have smooth corners. The school ones were pretty rectangular

Also is that cable straight through? I'm pretty sure they all need to be straight-through

Also 1 more thing is it safe to tie my LAN cables to heat pipes, as they already run through my home and it would be easy?

Assuming it's riser cable I think the jacketing would become brittle over time. If I'm not mistaken steam heated homes, those pipes are hot enough to where you don't want to touch them. I think the rise in temp would not be great enough to cause packet loss but it'd still breakdown the plastic sleeving. Make it dry out. Become brittle. Wouldn't recommend as a long term solution.

A feature that has been standardized on most/all network interfaces is a feature known as Auto-MDIX. This makes it so that it doesn't matter weather the cable is made as a strait-though or cross-over it'll detect and make the switch internally if necessary.

But if you're looking to make the cables yourself Strait-Though is the one you want. You're not connecting two like devices. (Except maybe daisy-chaining a switch off the router but that won't make a difference)
