Upgrading from i5 8400 to i7 9700k

Hi all,

I am planning on upgrading my CPU from an Intel i5 8400 to an i7 9700k relatively soon, and I was wondering if I need to do anything with/to the bios so that the upgrade is as seamless as possible.

And do I need to worry about losing my Windows key at all?

I have a MSI Z370 SLI PLUS ATX LGA1151 Motherboard currently, and I'd like to keep it if I can.

Any advice is very appreciated!

If you connected your user account with your Microsoft account it's better, but in general it's tied to your motherboard not your CPU though, so you should probably be ok either way.

I wondered about this.

Do I need to get the drivers/updated software for my mobo from MSI's website? Or would I just update it from inside the BIOS?

Thank you for clarifying! I thought this was the case but wasn't sure.

Look up how to update bios. You will want to do it in bios with a USB stick after you've downloaded the appropriate version.

There's some small risk involved but generally it works out correctly.

Looks like it shouldn't be too difficult! Thanks for the reply.
