I currently have two hp procurve switches, 2x8 port poe+ switches, usg pro, nvr, dell r610 and dell r620. Powering all of this equipment is two 1000va ups. That is currently my only backup. I usually get one-two power outages a year. These usually last 4-6 hours. Are there any power backup solutions that can last me at least a few hours before dying out? I do not mind using gas generators but buying anything over $250 is not a solution for me.

$250 is not enough buy a UPS big enough for 4-6 hours of runtime. You can look into a DIY battery+inverter system, might be possible to get 4-6 hours on your budget. You can buy a gas generator for $250, but at that price point don't expect the cleanest sine wave output and I would be hesitant to run computers off it.

As far as I know, a generator will not give you good sine. In fact, it will likely fuck your systems over. There's a thread I'll link below with useful insight. Basically, you will not get the proper generator you'd need with $250.

UPS's are more design for "Oh shit the power is out, lets safely shut down our servers and PC's." I dont really feel for that price you are going to find a UPS with a longer run time. Your best bet would be to look in to a generator.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Might be looking to increase my budget to get something more sustainable.

Thinking to invest into solar panels and batteries + inverter. These batteries are a bit expensive though.

$250 is frankly not even close to a good enough budget for a UPS with the kind of runtime you want. $250 isn't even enough to buy a dinky small generator. The cheapest one I can find new is $279 for a 1500 (surge)/1200W (sustained) generator. And frankly, 1200W might not even be enough for 2x 1000VA UPS's.

What's your actual wattage total consumption (peak) across both UPS's? Are they running on separate circuits or one circuit? What's the voltage and amps rating on the circuit (or circuits)? What model of UPS's are you currently using?

Speaking as someone who has 4+ hours of UPS battery backup across multiple locations at work, you're looking at minimum of probably $4000-$5000 for a UPS that can power a pair of servers and some switches for 4-6 hours. Totally doable, but it's not going to be cheap.

Please get back to me about the questions above and we can determine what your actual needs are.

Funny enough thats about how much one of those whole home Natural Gas Generators from Generac costs.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

My server consumes about 1 kw per day. I would add up the rest of the equipment and they use about 1 kw per day including peaks. Peak 1.5 kw on server. Everything is running on one circuit as I haven’t upgraded my electrical panel. Maybe I should invest in an empty 5000va ups and get some batteries for it which would cost me I assume around $1500.

You need to look at the runtime graphs for whatever UPS you look at.

A 5000VA UPS might well do just fine, but you'll want to check. Furthermore there's almost no way a 5000VA UPS will be compatible unless you have a circuit that does like 240V 30A (you'll need to check the specs of the UPS to determine it's input needs).

A good UPS will last you years - you'll just need to replace the battery every 4-5 years or so (or longer, if the batteries don't get much use).

If you're gonna go Solar, I'd suggest go full blown w/ battery storage systems. You can add a generator into the mix too still if you really need that off-grid backup for long enough - but you can definitely build a battery storage system that will hold enough solar power for a day or two (or longer if you build it big enough).

The benefit of the generator is that you can store weeks or months worth of fuel, if you ever thought you'd be without grid power for that long.

Yea, I was planning to put a battery storage system in place in the future.
