Hello,

I recently started some projection experiments, so I bought 2 of literally the cheapest one I could find (Overmax Multipic 3.1), and another one is on its way. These are used for testing dual-stack 3D, multi-projector HDR, and pseudo-ScreenX conversion (all open sourced here). The problem is, they're loud, even by themselves. And loud means 60+ dB SPL in this case, they're really annoying at quiet parts of the movies, and they can be heard at the other side of the house when there's no sound. I tried normal projectors, they basically have no noise, but I can't afford anything better right now, so I have to stick to them for a while. I'd make a soundproof enclosure, but I'm afraid of heat killing my projectors. Please show me anything that works, I'm thinking about cutting off their sides for extra fans, and changing the factory one to something more efficient at lower RPMs.

Putting the projector in an enclosure is like the worst thing you could do.

Replace the fans and add more quiet fans.

Do you have any recommendations?

No because I have no idea what size what thickness how many what pressure and what airflow the current fans are in your projectors.

How far are you willing to hack them up and make them ugly?

I don't care how they will look. Anything works.

I'll tear one apart in the weekend, hopefully I can tell you the exact type of fan that's in there.

make a soundproof enclosure with a vent fan , easy peasy

Punching a hole in a soundproof box would make it loud again, now with an extra fan, and if I made a zigzagging path to absorb the leaking sound, I'm afraid it would trap the hot air too. Or am I wrong on this one?

nope you would for sure just make the problem bigger. open one up look at the fans see if you can get quieter ones or possibly look at what kind of heating solution they have in place. maybe you can change it with something that can actually cool stuff

you can't trap air in a zig zag path if theres a fan. I don't even think you have to zig zag. sound is a wave. you just need to surpress 90% of the wave. a regular box with soundproofing and some intake/exhaust fans will do a lot
