Checking HDD health

Hi all,

 

How do i check the HDD health?  I got a number of 2TB HDD sitting around.  Would like to either utilise it or sell it.

If you have the ability test with Ubuntu from a live USB (you can unplug your current harddrive/SSD if you are uncomfortable/worried about your Windows install), you can run bad blocks on the drives which writes and reads to the entire drive, which will wipe them of any data, not "forensically wipe them", but all data will be deleted to any normal computer, and will also confirm the entire drive can be written and read without error. Then you can run a long SMART test on them to see if there was any issues ever reported via SMART.

 

If you have never done anything like this, its really not that hard at all. This is a guide for freenas, but it works the exact same in Ubuntu. Just need to make a Ubuntu instal USB, and when you boot into that it will give you the option to "test" and it will run the OS from t he flash drive.

If the drive has no errors in badblocks and SMART shows no issues, the drives are 100% good to go!

mmmm that samsung 750 is scary the sectors are staring to die since its relocating them hence why its yellow maybe not use that for anything. though the others seem just fine

The 750GB Samsung should be discarded, the hitachi is good but has 24000 hours which is very high, wouldn't trust it... The others are in good condition.

I had a Samsung HD204UI that died a while ago (Link). Nearly 8 years of service until it died.
