Affordable camera for low light video

Title says it all. Looking for a good camera for low light video, that doesn't cost thousands. I film bmx videos which happen to be 90% at night. I heard a7s ii is the best you can get but it's pretty pricy.

 

Most filming will be on a fisheye with some telephoto. 1080,120fps or 4k,60fps would be what I would like to film in. Don't mind grainy footage, as long as it's mostly interpretable what's going on.

Yeah the Sony cameras are king with low light. Otherwise I have been using a black magic pocket cinema for a while now and it's not as good as the A7S but it's pretty good with noise. It's also only $1299 and comes with Davanci Resolve for free. But you would need to drop more for an SSD and battery since CFAST cards are dumby expensive and the black magic's battery life is around 30 minutes on the cannon LP batteries. But honestly the A7S does so well in lowlight you could justify the price bump

I haven't been filming for long, but I do quite well with my friends a6500 and his lenses. At the moment I use my p20 pro which is good for a phone, but nothing like a dslr. 

 

If I went for an a7s what's the differences between the 1, 2, 3? Because the 3 has come out but I still heard the 2nd is better?

You should be able to find a7s cheaply. With these features that you want i doubt you could find anything cheaper tho

What's the difference between the mark 1, 2, 3? If I'm going all out on a camera I would rather get one I'll definitely be happier with for a lot longer, even if it costs a few hundred bucks more

The A7SIII isn't out yet. It has been rumored to come out for over 2 years now. Panasonic dropped the S1H and that is what the AS7III will most likely be competing with but that camera is $4000. So I would expect the AS7III to cost similarly. Black magic has gotten much better and BRAW is an amazing codec to work with but you would still have to rig out the pocket cinema to make it efficient.

I think I got confused with the A7III and didn't notice the no S. The whole Sony line up is confusing but is the S ones the good low light ones?

 

I also saw the A7SI has no stabilisation, which is definitely something I would like. A video I saw said the rolling shutter is bad so post stabilisation might not work very well ??

i mean you can also go the other way by getting a lens with a large aperture, though that doesn't usually make it cheaper.

The S is targeted more towards video so it’s a smaller sensor size compared to the R series but has support for more video centric features. I would get the II as the I is good but the generation hop adds a lot of nice features. Otherwise the GH5S is always a solid choice but again the lowlight isn’t as good. You could also get a speed booster to EF mounts which would help low light performance as a FF lens on a micro 4/3s sensor captures more light. But a metabones adapter is $650 so any money saved on the camera is now all gone.

Otherwise the GH5S is always a solid choice but again the lowlight isn’t as good. You could also get a speed booster to EF mounts which would help low light performance as a FF lens on a micro 4/3s sensor captures more light. But a metabones adapter is $650 so any money saved on the camera is now all gone. 

Woah, confusing me a lil there with the mounts and lenses. Think you could explain it to a camera dummy who has no knowledge about the lenses themselves?

Sure thing. I know Brandon explains it well in this video

but a quick way to think about it is a larger lens is physically larger so it will let in more light than a micro 4/3s lens which is smaller. But you aren't changing the sensor size so adapting to a larger lens will allow you to capture more light. Imagine walking outside in a ran storm with a pencil and a swimming pool. Then count how many raindrops hit the end of the pencil versus landing in the pool.

It's might physically be the same size but the R series has significantly more megapixels.

but a quick way to think about it is a larger lens is physically larger so it will let in more light than a micro 4/3s lens which is smaller. But you aren't changing the sensor size so adapting to a larger lens will allow you to capture more light. Imagine walking outside in a ran storm with a pencil and a swimming pool. Then count how many raindrops hit the end of the pencil versus landing in the pool. 

It's might physically be the same size but the R series has significantly more megapixels.

Yeah that makes sense now, a fat lens collects more light but condenses it down to fit onto the sensor properly. 

 

Also about the R/S the Sony amazon page says R is for resolution, S is for sensitivity.

Well the adapter is what makes it fit properly on the sensor otherwise you would see a cropped version of what a larger sensor would see on the same lens.  I’ve heard the R and S mentioned like that before but that’s not officially what Sony says. It’s not wrong though as the R is much higher res than the S series

Just to contribute to this: no matter what camera you end up deciding to buy, adding lighting will be more impactful.

It will be worth your budget to pick up a few compact LED lights that you can use to spotlight some of the action.

It's not going to be some giant lamp with day-from-night capabilities, but if you can even get a backlight to help your viewers pick out the silhouette of the rider while they're doing their tricks, it'll make your videos alot better than 1 more f-stop on a lens will.

I do try using lights on the camera (drop handle) but they tend to light up about 3ft very well then after than just drops off to black, I'm guessing because the close objects are so bright they blow out the very far objects. Also having a light in your eye when you're already struggling to see as it is isn't very fun.

I have also tried using big portable floodlights from further away but for the size and weight they really suck ass to bring around everywhere
