Need advice on PC upgrades!

Go to solution Solved by Scia,

The 2500k performs pretty much the same as it's IVY / Haswell counterparts so there's not much point in "upgrading".

If you want to upgrade your GPu go for the Single Card solution. Had 2 680s [~770 SLI] and had A LOT of hassle with it. Like ignoring DP connections once SLI was turned on, overclockability went down the drain and the likes. Go for a single 780 if you chose the Nvidia route.

Hello errybody!

I'm currently running something like this:

CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor  (£184.10 @ Amazon UK)
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler  (£64.90 @ Amazon UK)
Motherboard: Asus P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Sniper Gaming Series 12GB (3 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Corsair Force Series 3 60GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
Storage: Corsair Force Series GT 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk  (£93.74 @ Scan.co.uk)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  (£49.96 @ CCL Computers)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 2GB Video Card
Case: BitFenix Raider ATX Mid Tower Case  (£78.55 @ Overclockers.co.uk)
Power Supply: Corsair Professional Gold 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
Total: £471.25

I'm looking to upgrade my cpu and gpu, and possibly motherboard.

I've been thinking of i7-3770K, gtx 780 ghz edition from gigabyte or dual GTX 760.
I'm unsure if that's too much of an overkill and wether I should go with something "smaller".

I have 2 screens (of which I know nothing but the brands and connectors) and I always game at 1080p.

The only expectations I have fom my new upgrades is that I'd like to be able to game at 1080p and stream on twitch.
I've also been reading up on some reviews and found out the nvidia 800 series GPU's aren't that far off. Should I wait for them to come out before I upgrade? I don't know about the next gen intel CPUs either, are they coming soon, and should I wait for those?
I may be able to budget my way into purchasing a 1150 socket motherboard at the expense of the other parts, if necessary.

Thank you kindly in advance, any opinions/suggestions are welcome.

1150 is a waste. 3770k and 780 looks good, if you have money to spend.

I would actually go for an AMD card if they are cheaper where you live.  However the 780 sounds good, I would go for a AMD r9 280x or 290x if they are cheaper but the 780 is a really good card.  The i7 3770k is a good processor!

I've approximately 900€ to spend, would be awesome if I could get away with even less spent.

your current rig looks fine other then your gpu you could get a 780 for your budget

Your pc is good, you should wait for the 800 series or just get the 780 ti and forget the rest. I have the 2500k myself with 2 gtx 770 and I don`t have a problem.

Another problem I have is that I think something in my pc is starting to break. I had some trouble with the pc turning on a while back when I did some furniture re-arranging. The pc would get power but it wouldn't boot. Without any specific knowledge of what it might be I suspect the motherboard, GPU or PSU. My OS is installed on the 120gb SSD.

Wait for the 800 series, the performance increase is supposed to be fairly significant

Also the 2500k is still relevant I would keep it if I were you

The GPU I would change for something in the high ranks.

I'm a gamer, I barely do any editing. I play all sorts of games from MMOs to RPGs to FPS, mostly graphics heavy games.

Why dont you get a budget card and future-proof your cpu? r7 260x is a great budget card but with that budget i think you can go higher... 690?

Yeah I've been feeling like it's lived through it's time, but I can still wait for some time and get the gtx 800s.

Though from what I heard the actual "new architecture" 800s aren't going to be released until Q3/Q4, and knowing how these things go with the speculations it might be even later.

But then again, what do I know. I just play games  :P

From what I've seen from the performance ratings the 260x isn't all that much more powerful than my 6950. I don't think that one's worth the "upgrade".

And I don't really see the point in purchasing a previous generation GPU with newer ones available.

Why get a 260X when the 6950 is close to it in terms of performance? It would just be a waste. 690 would be good bu nw cards and components are being released soon so He'd be better of saving.
