Help, Upgrading from i5-7640X

Hi, in 2017 I bought the 7640X cpu like an idiot with the Mobo and now I’m stuck with a x299 asrock gaming k6 mobo and a terrible socket I don’t want to do a full rebuild and socket 2066 cpus cost upwards of 600$ in Australia what do I do 

 

edit: I am cpu bottle necked and have about $300 to spend my cooler is a liquid aio h80i and I have a h700i case

Sell both mobo and cpu and get a 3600 plus some b450 board like the msi max boards.

It's the only senseable option and should be way less than 600 dollars total

Sell it and buy something with more than 4 thread spaces? There are cheaper ways to get a mobo but I don’t think it’s your primary problem.

eBay prices are reasonable, you can snag a 6 core 7800X for a little under $300 USD

two options, change platform and pay for a new board (tho now you could sell an extra item), or stay on this platform and pay for the expensive CPUs. I'd choose the former,

I mean the X299 boards are still fairly valuable aren't they? Could probably get ~$150 aus for the board, honestly I don't know who would buy the CPU, but at least that puts you a significant percentage of the way towards an AM4 cpu/mobo since you already have RAM? Seems like a pretty cheap upgrade if you're willing to sell stuff on ebay or gumtree. Also you can get an am4 bracket for the h80i, it's $5 in the US but I'm not sure if you can get it shipped to AUS. Maybe casegear or umart has it in stock?

 

EDIT: A 7640X recently sold on ebay for $110USD plus $7 shipping if that gives you any indication of price

I don't want have to do a full rebuild and remove my mobo because that requires changing graphics cards, fans, etc.

x299 isn't terrible, it's just terrible value, though those low-core-count chips never made any sense to me at all.

If they’d made a multithreaded chip for it it wouldn’t be nearly such a problem, but they didn’t.

Not sure what you mean by that... all the LGA2066 chips are multi core / multi thread.

?? They’re 4/4.  Multi core yes.  Not enough cores but “multi” technically. in that 4 is more than 1.  Multithread, no.  If there was a 4/8 available I suspect it wouldn’t have gotten the horrible reputation it did.  Intel actually hyper threaded even their i3s recently.

Oh i understand you now, you are only talking about the 7640x and 7740x.

 

X299 as a platform has many more chips, all of which have hyperthreading. Most are 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 cores, with double that in thread count. 

 

My main rig is x299, a 16 core / 32 thread 7960x, and the current refresh top model is an 18 core / 36 thread 10980xe.
