...one speaker.. with a sub...  trying to make a pa?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Ah.  You want 2.1 or 3 channels then?  There’s this thing with consumer subs where they like to put the amp for the sub in the subwoofer.  An ampless sub is often more expensive.

2.1

this getting more confusing for me and learning something new. why the does a ampless cost more? that is one less thing that the manufacturer need to put in.

i guess i would have to go with the cheaper sub woofer with the build in amp in the future.

i forgot to say im planing on using this on my pc, so where would i even plug the sub into?

Supply and demand I suspect.  A 2.1 channel would split would split from a b or right and left front. It’s done that way because the low end sounds subwoofers make are basically useless for stereo sound.  So they save some money and make only 1 channel for the very low notes.  If you want to use a computer as a source they will occasionally so the sound splitting for you and you’ll have 8 audio outs for 7.1 surround sound. Basically though there’s mono, stereo, and variants of stereo.  Way way back there was also quadrophonic, which was recorded in a different way but it was very short lived and predates home computers entirely.  Anything other than two channel stereo (not including quadrophonic) is fairly new.  Dolby 5.1 channel was first released as a concept with “Star Wars”

They often cost more as they have a totally different application, most professional theater subwoofer's are totally passive with speakON input's from an often very powerful and large amplifier, and these subwoofers can get very very loud (a JBL 5628 subwoofer can get to 140dB)

However subwoofer's need tonnes of power, and for extremely high dBA you just can't these very large and very hot amplifiers in the main enclosure of the subwoofer, the JBL 5628 need's 16,000 watts to hit 140dBA, which is alot.

Alot of the time the subwoofer's with built in amplifiers wont get as loud, or will be flawed in some way, such as some older subwoofers amplifiers would resonate at certain frequencies, which is something you really do not want. However when you get to high end subwoofers with built in amplifiers, such as the SVS PB16 Ultra or the REL No. 25, their flaws are so minute they don't really matter, however these sub's are very large, heavy, expensive and difficult to manufacture.

TLDR: Externally amplified subwoofers often get louder and have a much difference use-case.

Main speaker setup is now;

Mini DSP SHD Studio -> 2x Mola Mola Tambaqui DAC's (fed by AES/EBU, one feeds the left sub and main, the other feeds the right side) -> 2x Neumann KH420 + 2x Neumann KH870

(Having a totally seperate DAC for each channel is game changing for sound quality)
