New GPU 1660 Super Questions! [Brands / Compatibility etc.]

K i a r a

Upgrading from my 1050ti to a 1660 Super

I have a lot of questions to ask and was hoping someone or some people could help me!
This is where I am going to be buying the card.

1660 Supers. Here

Before I am REALLY hoping on a Black Friday / Cyber Monday sale, with a quick look, I noticed a 1660Ti HERE for 60$ off.

My questions is does it go from worst to best like this?

1660 > 1660Ti > 1660 Super being the best?

1. What are the difference in brands?

Something like Zotac or EVGA are around 300$ while MSI is near 370$ (CAD)

Is there something I should be looking for in the card? Such as Overclocked I know not to go wtih the minis.

2. 6 Pin Connector?

So I have a EVGA 600 B1 and I am not sure if it has the right connectors for this GPU. if anyone knows let me know!

3. Mother board compatibility

I have a ABPro 350 Mother board.

4. Monitor Setup

So I currently have my monitor going from VGI to HDMI to the GPU.

Then a TV for YouTube and such with HDMI to DVI to the GPU.

I noticed on most of the 1660s its 1 HDMI and 3 Display ports, is this gonna work? Or what kinda wire am I gonna need.

Thanks Alot :)

1. Different models have different features.  Some will be faster some will be quieter some will be cheaper.  You generally can’t have all three.  The brand doesn’t matter much though, as they vary constantly between features.  The model generally does.

2. no idea but the internet will.  To make it more fun faster more expensive cards need more power so some will have different connections.

look up your PSU on google and find out what connections it has

3. no idea what an abpro motherboard is again, google will know.

4. Very few cards still have dvi ports.  I assume vgi  means vga.  There are numerous ways they could be hooked up.  Does your monitor have anything besides VGA?  VGA is even older than  dvi.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Argh.  Trust me it’s old.  You may have bought it new but it was made a long time ago.

so new old stock.  Dvi-d will give you digital picture but will cost buying another cable.  Luckily hdmi is still used.

cheapest solution (hopefully)

A dviD to display port cable would give you 1 hdmi and 1 DisplayPort which would work.  You replace only the tv cable and leave the monitor alone.  The monitor may not work though because some GPUs can no longer produce analog output.  In this case see “even more futureproofing”

futureproofing

That dviD is old though.  There is an argument for instead of getting a cable for the tv, getting a dviD to DisplayPort adaptor and a display port cable so the next time this happens you won’t have to find dviD as it may no longer exist.

even more futureproofing

If you also want to get your monitor off vga you’ll need two adaptors and two cables from “futureproofing” DviD doesn’t have any more resolution than vga but it is digital.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Question,

It says it needs a 8 Pin power connector.

From the EVGA spec website, I dont see the 8pin Connector.

https://www.evga.com/Products/Specs/PSU.aspx?pn=e7a4ca30-cc2f-4769-b8ac-4293f30e7820

It does have a PCIe cable, but idk if its the right one.

No.  Your TV would go hdmi to DisplayPort. And your monitor would go dvi to hdmi.  The only hope for the monitor is to use the hdmi connection.  Even that might not work, but it’s the best shot.

Your confusion turns out to be handy though.  I was assuming your monitor and/or your TV was digital or at least digital capable.  It’s possible they’re not. If they’re both analog only it’s a problem.  They will both eventually be made obsolete because the only thing left that is even sort of analog is the HDMI port.

Gonna need the make and model of both devices so they can be looked up to find out if either one is digital.

The complicated way:

The object of the game is to get both things running for minimal money if possible.

You got to get rid of all the dvi, or at the very least convert from it.  Dvi is dying or nearly dead.  Manufacturers didn’t like dvi. (Why will be shown) This is why adaptors are better than cables.  An adaptor converts the port.  If you change again you may have an entirely different standard to convert from and you may not be able to get something that attaches to dvi at all on the future.

The problem is dvi on your monitor could be dvi-i or dviD, or dvi-dL. If it’s dvi-dL it’s a problem.  It probably isn’t though because the vga is there so it’s probably dvi-I or dviD.

IF your monitor is analog you may still have a serious problem because a lot of stuff won’t do analog any more either. If it IS dvi-I or dvi-DL it will never run right unless it can get an analog signal, which may no longer be available at all anywhere. HDMI will at least pass analog though, So we YOLO it and hope that the port is dviD and abandon the vga port because it is analog only.... crap.  It just occurred to me that BOTH the TV and the monitor might be analog.

on the new card you have only one port that even might pass analog and two devices that might need it.  Need the specs on both devices to see if even anything can be done.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

The Monitor is an Acer H21HQL. ( I can find legit no Info on it)
Besides I can tell you it has a DVI-D IN & VGA in.

TV is this: Insignia 40" 1080p HD 60Hz LED TV (NS-40D420NA20)

One may be enough though it’s a bit of a gamble.

I can’t find anything on the monitor either.  That’s flat out weird.  My guess is that the name is wrong.

your TV is probably digital.  It’s LED, and it’s got  hdmi 1.4 ports.  It doesn’t actually say digital though so it’s only probably.  Your monitor might be digital capable too, but let’s pretend it isn’t.

Move is still the same: convert TV hdmi to display port, and convert monitor dvi to hdmi.

the monitor may just fail though.  I wish there was data on that monitor.

Tried to look at your link but amazon failed spectacularly.

assuming “this” is a cable that has hdmi on one end and DisplayPort on the other then yes.  And pray the monitor works.  If it doesn’t, the monitor is legacy and you’ll have to put your old 1550ti back in until you can replace the monitor with something digital.

Yes.  It might be too new for the old monitor.

IF the monitor is analog only.  It might not be.  Also the 1660 is built off the 1600 so it might still speak analog on the HDMI port.  Even a 1600 might be too new though.  I don’t know.

the vast majority of 1050 models do not have a pcie power connector, they only get their power from the motherboard.

For anything at least as powerful as a 1060 3gb/RX 470, every unit will have a 6 pin or 8 pin pcie connector at least

and for non extreme graphics cards, it's cool to use both of the leads on a single cable for your GPU. Many people ask if daisy chained PCIe connectors are safe, and the only time they're not is when you are doing it from a mediocre PSU to a very power hungry GPU.

But like the 1050 there is no need for it right? I can just tuck it away for now ? Im confused ?

yes

you don't sound confused, so far you've explained everything correctly with your questions.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

I finally put it all back together. And now waiting for my 1660ti to come in the mail.

have you ever tried PC on the table?
I have a lot of dust in my room for what ever reason. So was suggested to try it on my table and maybe it will help with the dust build up.

I never noticed a difference, but I think the best practice is cleaning regularly. That's what I do, and the dust filters help a lot
