Cloud gaming VM

Is there a specific product that cloud gaming use? Like geforce now, like do they use VMware? or something like that? Or do they make their own software?

There is no one definition of “cloud gaming” let alone one company.  “Cloud” is one of those amorphous buzzwords that means “a somewhere else that may or may not keep changing”

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

How about geforce now do you know what they use atm?

Aha!  Different question!  I’m sure someone likely does.  I have no clue personally :/

 

if this thread goes unanswered you might want to make a new one with something more specific in the title.  You’re looking specifically for people with geforceNOW knowledge.

I would imagine they use some kind of virtualization, it makes a lot more sense than a single, dedicated server for each GeForce Now account to use.

Pretty sure all cloud runs on some form of virtualization because it allows partitioning of resources. E.g. 2 cpus go into this vm, 32 gigs ram go into the other. Giving user the actual bare metal machine is very inefficient use of resources because most won't use it to full capacity 100% of the time. Cloud companies make much more $$$ if these unused capacity are to go into another vm they can sell to another customer. 

 

Not saying this bare metal option doesn't exist but customers will need to pay hefty more for it

I remember when beta testing geforce now I could actually alt tab out of the game and go to a windows 8 desktop. Everything was locked down though

this reddit post indicates they are using windows server. it's possible they are using windows virtualization or something else. My bet is they are using windows virtualization because they have a relationship with windows developers by being a major graphics innovator, but I have no inside knowledge.

Yeah, that was my thought process as well.

 

It would probably be much more cost-effective to have a couple servers with high end hardware running VMs.
