9900KS or?

Sequence

What is the general consensus on the 9900ks?

Currently on a 5820k want to upgrade intels 10nm desktop still seems way off so do I bite the bullet on a ks?

the 5820K isn't exactly very bad. What do you need to upgrade to do?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

have a custom loop so would just integrate it into that.

Would you mind a Ryzen based system? the R9 3900X is also an option for you.

I rocked the 5820k for a while, then upgraded motherboards and cpus (went from 5820k on an Asus x99 Sabertooth to 6900k on the Rampage V Edition 10).

x99 is still decent, but I get what you're saying about wanting to upgrade.

Now, I'm justifiably called an Intel fanboy as my main rigs have been Intel going all the way back to my first 'all-new-parts' PC in 2000 with a Celeron 566, but if you're more rational than me, honestly man this new Ryzen 9 3950x (16c/32t) seems to be edging out if not totally destroying everything Intel sells right now - with the one exception being max gaming performance where the 9900ks still holds the crown by roughly 10-15% lead.

I'm about to build a new gaming-only rig, so will probably just stick with the 9900ks because all I want it to do is max gaming performance but if you do anything else as well the 3950x seems like the much better option. The Ryzen is MSRP for $750 which is a bit more than the 9900ks's price-gouged 550-600 bucks (MSRP is 514) but you can get a decent AMD motherboard for a lot less than the top Z390 boards that you'd want to pair a 9900k/ks with so overall it's kind of a wash.

TLDR;

My attempt at unbiased advice is to go with the Ryzen 9 3950x if you do anything else outside of gaming and want max overall performance. If you almost exclusively game, or gaming performance is your top priority the 9900ks will not let you down.

the 3950x just put every intel offering in the dirt, so unless you have to have intel it's all amd (i didn't even jump ship until i saw the numbers on the 3950x), just clutching onto my 9900k as it gets blown out of the water.

The way intel binned the 9900ks is also clearly lazy af compared to how amd handled the 3950x.

An i9 9900ks would be a better match for your 2080 ti if you play at 1440p or lower.

If I had to replace one of my 5ghz i7 8086ks it is what I would get.

It is a bit shocking to me how well the 2080 ti likes 5gz CPUs that I think there will be tough times for anyone without one when the next gen ti GPUs are released.

Agreed that intel needs to get their butts in gear, but I dont think the 3950x really changes anything for someone in the market for 9900k at this point.  The 3900x changed that already, and if someone wasnt looking to get a 3900x (at comparable price to the 9900k) doubtful they would be looking at a 3950x (in the HEDT price bracket).

IMO they would do amazing making a high freq binned 3700x (3800x plus? lol).  It would kill the 9900k.  Anyone going to a 9900k at this point is going to be basically looking for gaming dominance.  The 3950x doesn't beat the 9900k in that realm similar to how the 3900x didnt beat it.  It is basically overkilling in a category the 3900x already dominated in (multithreaded workstation loads).

The issue is it is at prior TR price levels and multi threaded performance category.  400-500 dollars is already a huge ask for a CPU for most, pretty much anyone going to make use out of the 3950x is someone that is in the market for HEDT I would think.

Also ya, the KS release and all that smacks of nothing but super lazy, intel needs to step it up for sure

I thought the 3900x hit the sweet spot more for price being that you are getting essentially an HEDT (though on a consumer socket) that competes with intels entire HEDT stack, almost games as good as the 9900k, and comes with a cooler.

If I get back to doing more big video renders again my next system might be an AMD core beast, but for now the 9900k does everything I need it to (mostly gaming now, lol) while having enough to do the few renders a week I need it for without seeming like I have to wait an exorbitant amount of time for the export.  Also it still crushes photoshop which is nice!

If you intend to overclock, there is no reason to play the lottery on saving $60 bucks on a 9900k versus a 9900KS, since most current R0 steppings now will overclock worse than the older P0 steppings, due to 9900KS binning.  And the KS is the same price as the K was on release (when not price gouged).

Biting the bullet now or later?  Ask yourself: If your CPU too slow to enjoy your computer right now?
