HELP! Video Photo Editing/Gaming PC build from 2012 upgrade 2019 GPU & Storage (RTX 2070 and NVME compatible?)

Hello so looking to do some upgrading for my PC but never built before looking for advice so i hopefully avoid any bad decisions/mistakes beforehand. Want to upgrade GPU from a gtx 680 to a rtx 2070 and add an NVME drive if possible for around $700. For both of these i want to know if they are compatible with my motherboard (Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H ATX) and case (Cooler Master HAF XM (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case) before i buy? For NVME do i need to buy an adapter for PCIe slot to make compatible? And is it even possible to switch that to be my new boot drive with the OS(windows)? for the 2070 what type of power supply would be adequate? Also just in general what upgrades would you recommend?

M.2 isn't really supported on any 3rd gen motherboards. Sure, there are some x79 boards from china that have modded it into the chipset, but the best option for you is a regular old 2.5" SSD and a 3.5 for storage.  Everything else looks fine.

What power supply? Doubtful that NVME is supported on that platform

Do you only have a 1080p 60hz display?

The best value higher end GPU right now is an RX 5700 around $329, but it's pretty already overkill for 1080p.

Should probably start with a modern platform, and just reuse your GPU for a little while, while you sell the old hardware. Then get like an RX 5700, and upgrade the display. It's 80-90% as fast as a 2070 super.

Probably want to replace the old PSU as well.

Alternatively you could pick up an RX 480/580 8GB and it's still like 60% faster than your current GPU, and perfectly fine for 1080p gaming. They're like $100 on ebay. Or just buy an RX 570 new.

Thanks for the advice, i'll prob do that but i just want to save money if it's going to cost a lot more to replace.

I'm thinking based on what you've advised i may just upgrade GPU (is the RX 570 you suggested compatible with my current build?)  and push this build as long as i can to save money and just do a $1200 build in about 3 years time, which i'll def come back here for ;)

Yes, a RX570 should work well with your build. It's a very capable mid grade card for 1080p gaming.

Bit harder to do 1440p 60hz with an RX 580 8GB, but is doable on medium settings depending on the game.

Your CPU is still fine for 60hz gaming, just not so much production stuff.

Just grab an RX 5700 with a new PSU if you have that kind of budget now. If the PSU is old you might as well replace it maybe. Or the RX 5500 is coming soon. Mostly it has Radeon Image Upscaling, to cheat out more fps.

PCPartPicker Part List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/JmPGvn

Video Card: Sapphire Radeon RX 5700 8 GB PULSE Video Card  ($359.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: be quiet! Pure Power 11 600 W 80+ Gold Certified ATX Power Supply  ($79.90 @ Amazon)
Total: $439.89

Things will be wholly different in 3 years, Just look out for good deals on R7 1700s or R7 2700s. the first gen parts are near $100 sometimes, though that one isn't an upgrade so much for gaming.

16 GBs would also be just fine even for some 4k video editing.

Motherboard: ASRock B450M Steel Legend Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($89.99 @ Amazon)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory  ($59.99 @ Newegg)

Perfect thanks for the confirmation. What would you suggest for 1440p compatible with my current system?

I’m in a very similar boat, getting ready to upgrade my whole system from the same cpu from 2012 and a gtx 760. You are going to want nvme, I suggest grabbing a 2nd or even 3rd gen ryzen cpu, 3600x for example, or 2700x even and get some of these modern enhancements. Granted pretty sure that photoshop still favors intel slightly, but Ryzen is no joke for the price. It will mean changing mobo and ram as well, but we will see huge gains from updating to 2019/2018 hardware.
