Is X570 worth the price?

CWSfan16

I am looking into upgrading my PC this holiday season.  My current rig has an i7-4790k, 32 gbs of DDR3 ram, and RTX 2080.  The new Ryzen line, specifically the 3700x and the 3800x, have caught my eyes since launch.  Now, looking at the options of motherboards, I am trying to decide if the X570 platform is worth the extra money, or if X470 will work for me.  Is the extra speed in teh PCIe Gen 4 necessary?  I remember a reviewer state that if you didn't know if you need PCIe Gen 4, you probably don't, and I think I fall in this category.  To give you an idea of the cost savings that I am looking at:  At my local store, I can get an Asus Prime X570-Pro for about $250, where as I can get the Asus Prime X470-Pro for $125.

Is there really that much of a difference?

I don't feel like I have a long list of must haves... I currently have a SATA M.2, lond with 3 other drives (1 SSD and 2 HDD).  I also currently have a WiFi card, so I would need room for that along with my 2080.  I cannot think of anything else that is truly a necessity.

If your not going to be transferring large file live videos all the time the extra PCI-E 4 speed NVME isn't needed.  X570 does provide better on lower cost boards to accomidate the 12 and upcoming 16 core parts but if your only looking for 8 core a good X470 board will do you good.

As far as your choice of board for X470 I have that same board and I plan on getting rid of it in the next month or with extra Christmas bonus. VRM's run hot even with good cooling, and 8 core chips is max for this board. Also no debug LEDs or post code of any kind. I find it hard to get memory OC stable as well. I have RMA the board for those issue but seems just to be how its designed.

I would look over this list for choices for a decent board.

Thanks for the hand on experience... Also, that is an awesome resource for the motherboards, thanks again

Just get the X470, you don't need the X570 features, and frankly, you're better off without the chipset fan.

There's a X570 Phantom at little over 120$, for this price, it's a no brainer. Great board and with the X570 chipset.

Or you could get a really really nice B450 board if you don't plan on using SLI. afaik that's pretty much all that X470 offers over B450. The Xx70 variants will usually have slightly better VRMs but if you are really taking a good look at what you need then you will probably find B450 ticks all the boxes for a much better price.
