Is it possible to see different CPU on the same cooler ? just to actually see how much of the cooler we actually needs since the TDP on the CPU is sometimes misleading

Im with the mentaility of "IF IM NOT SURE IF ITS ENOUGH COOLING, GO OVERKILL"

GPU             : ASUS RX 580 Dual OC (Formerly ASUS GTX 1060 but it got corroded for some odd reasons)

This would get difficult because paste application can have a large effect.  You could see different thermals with the same cooler and same cpu and same paste even.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Didn't Linus (and others) debunk that myth?  According to them the differences between different methods are very small, unless you apply way too little thermal paste of course,  even "too much" isn't that bad (except the mess that potentially creates on your motherboard lol)

I’ve seen it debunked several times by pros.  They’re pros though.  I’ve screwed it up once or twice myself.  Temptation to quote my grandfather on the difference between foolproof and damnfool proof.  Also when comparing stuff very small may still be enough to make one configuration edge out another.  Remember this is being done because TDP isn’t being trusted.

 

It could be done in a sufficiently uniform method for testing.  A jig of some kind to control paste amount and location perhaps.  Might not even need that.  A bigger one would be air ambients, humidity, and simple breezes.  Rough numbers could be gotten I guess.

True.  A known non cpu joule heat source perhaps.  Some sort of block of metal producing a known number of joules.  Rig up some sort of custom soldering iron tip shaped like a CPU maybe.

Same cooler will perform differently on different CPUs already due to different heat transfer performance between CPU die and heat spreader, so it wouldn't be a great reference for the cooler itself...

i mean the point is with a list of test on several CPUs with the same cooler, the person willing to buy it can either get a higher end cooler or just stay with the stock or the 212 or similar stuff. it just helps a bit.
