I just ordered PC parts for my first ever build. I currently use Mac computers. I’m just curious what’s it like to use windows 10 in 2019. The forced updates is what really scares me because I plan to use the computer to edit video. It used to be all the rage to hate on Windows 10 and the update system. Is Windows 10 as bad as it used to be? Was it ever bad? Do I still need to be worried about updates ruining my render?

They finally toned it down after a while, people complained so much when their PCs shut themselves down because turns out that's a huge problem, so that doesn't happen anymore unless your "active hours" settings are messed up

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

So is the active hours setting the work around to avoid the headache of the random restarts? Is shelling out the extra money for Windows 10 Pro worth it for the ability to postpone them? If all I plan to do is edit video and game, Windows 10 Home will probably be just fine for me?

There aren't random restarts.

Windows notifies you when you need to restart and waits a long time for you to check the notification and schedule a restart time in the future or do it immediately.

IMO not really worth it to pay full price for windows, the grey market keys for like $3 are best

I've been happy with Win 10. I don't think there's as much of a learning curve going from Mac OS to Windows as there use to be. The small incremental updates have never really been an issue for me. On occasion a larger full feature update from MS will break something but it's never been more than a 20 minute fix. No OS is perfect and people will tell you reasons why they love or hate one or the other. Just use it and form your own opinion

Apple is now pushing the force update model, even started with iOS devices.

But all the scare about the system randomly restarting was just crap. It only did so if you go out of your way to delay restarts several times.

That said, that was back then, today, Microsoft did lose things up from feedback and complaints they were getting, and now allows you to delay updates longer, and even give you months before upgrading to a new version of Windows 10 (basically until the end of support of the current version you have, which is long).

You should not. Windows 10 also has (always had) something called "Active Hours", which you can define a time range (up to 18h) where you don't want Windows to do any updates during this time. Recently, they added a system that monitors what you are doing and based on that determine your active hours if you don't manually set it. Based on my test, it is very generous, but maybe best to set it manually, especially if your work flow doesn't change over time, if it does change, bets to leave it auto so that it adapts over time.

Lastly, you define your maintenance schedule from the old Security and Maintenance panel (just type in the search box, and it will show up), so that Windows doesn't interfere in your work flow in terms of defragging the system (if you have an HDD), quick virus/malware scan, etc. while you work. By default it is at 2am if your system is turned on, else it will do it when it can. Beside the first time, it is usually quick on a fast system (a few minutes), but if you tend to work during this time, or your system will be off and you don't want it to trigger later on, you can set a time that best fit your needs.

Been using Windows 10 for 3 years, now have 3 PCs at home using it, never had a forced shut down because of updates in all that time. All I ever see is the occasional prompt to install updates when I shut down or restart. And I haven't created a maintenance schedule or set up "active hours", everything regarding updates is on default.

When you first start your PC you'll have to endure an hour at least of updates to Windows, other software and hardware drivers, which is probably more streamlined and less annoying on a Mac, but after that you'll be fine.

For sure you will issues going from Mac to Windows, I used Macs for years before switching, but your issues will be mostly remembering the correct keyboard shortcuts and the differences between Control Panel and the equivalent on the Mac.

Enjoy!

Love not hate
