Hey guys I just built in the Phanteks P400a and am confused by the fan controller in this case. Does it just control the LEDs? Do the case fans all need to get power from the motherboard separately? That is how I have it set up, but I thought the point of a fan controller was to tie all the fans power into.

Not always. Some fan controllers can control both the LED's on the fans as well as the speeds of the fans, but some require them to be separate (so one controller for the LED's and one controller or fan spliter for the normal 3 pin/4 pin power connectors). In the P400A Digital's case, the provided controller is for the LED's only.

Yeah I got conufsed because the non-rgb version of the case has a fan controller. I really like the looks of the rgb fans and may add some more. I did not like having to put all four of my fans straight to the mobo so I will likely buy some splitters. I am a bit confused about what fans I can put in as I may put 2 argb fans at the top exhaust, but I am not sure if these need to be the special digital rgb ones to work with the rgb controller or just any old argb fans.

RGB as a whole is just confusing.

If it's listed as a 3 pin ARGB fan accompanied by a list of motherboard compatible softwares like Asus Aura, MSI Mystic Lighting, etc. then it's liekly to be the same connector as the one for your digital RGB controller for oyur phanteks LED controller.

Fans from brands like Corsairt, NZXT, Lian Li, Thermaltake, and others use either proprietary connecors and.or connectors, so those wont work. There's a pretty good breakdown of all of them here:
