Last night I put an AIO in my son's computer so I could overclock it. It is a Ryzen 5 3600 in an MSI B450 motherboard with 16gb of Coarsair 3200 megahertz ram.

 

I started my overclock with voltage in auto and just increased the multiplier slowly. Currently it is at 43 thus running at 429 Megahertz. It is completely stable, I have not yet pushed it to instability. Stress tests are fine, HOWEVER with the voltage at auto it is running 1.42 volts with temps maxing out under the CPU-Z stress test @81°c. At rest temps are hovering between 38°c and 41°c.

 

I have read that the maximum voltage you want to run those chips at is 1.32. However it is stable and not thermal throttling. This said is it safe in this configuration to keep running like this?

 

I have attached before and after runs with CPU-Z. I would like to see if I can push it any further but don't want to toast the chip with high voltage.

 

Once set I plan on overclocking the memory and the graphics card as well.

Don’t overclock the multiplier, and leave the voltage on auto. Can’t imagine what voltages it’s pushing through that cpu.

I think 1.35v is fine for 7nm long term, but raising PBO for higher frequency and offset voltage mode for controlling voltage (it will go past 1.4V all the time with auto voltage) is the way for 3rd gen. Multiplier way works but not as good as PBO

Precision Boost Overdrive. Set the power and current limits to 999, and scalar step by step like you would with the core ratio.

Anything above 1.325 under sustained load may cause CPU degradation. This is damage caused by electron migration and may take time to occur. You risk damaging the CPU and seeing that it becomes not stable at the same clocks and voltages as before.

 Is this better because the processor won't sit at its highest frequency all the time?

it actually could hit higher frequencies in single core workload speeding things up

Okay well I will need to do a bunch more reading and then as I don't feel comfortable just tweaking settings without knowing what they're doing as I would rather not brick my son's new gaming PC we just built ?

Right now it is stable at 4.35Ghz @ 1.32v running cinibench R20 with a score of 3939 and a max temp while running R20 70°c after running 3 times in a row. 4.4 was unstable.

 

I'm going to try and do memory and video card next then read a bunch so I can run the PBO overclock.

 

Even though I set voltage lower in the bios it is still reading 1.312v which is fine by me. I'd rather run a tad under than at redline.
