Thermal Paste Recommendation

Taintedmind

I was curious if it's recommended to re-paste every time a processor is detached from its cooling source, such as a processor tower/cooler/heat sync and/or a graphics card cooler?  Any useful info would be appreciated  ?

Repasting is good practice but the difference is often very small as long as the paste isn't old or otherwise disturbed like being smeared off.

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/

It's recommended, because otherwise you can trap air bubbles.

Consider a thermal pad. I started using this one several months ago and my CPU temps are equal to a dozen different pastes I have used. Even Linus and other YouTubers have recommended it and you see them using it all of the time in order to quick swap CPUs without having to deal with paste. Seriously, the performance is incredible. I'm currently running my 8700k at 5ghz on all cores with a nice air cooler and this pad and my temps are fantastic! I've taken my cooler off three or four times to move parts around and the pad comes out and goes right back in like it's nothing!

Yes, although I've seen people use the 30x30 for AMD and reported it cools just the same. But, yes, 30x30 Intel and 40x40 for AMD would be typical.

Thanks - I'm about to order parts w/a friend tomorrow for his $2k computer and I was wonderin which one I should get for it (i9-9900KS).  I have the i7-8700k (in description), so I am thinkin about purchasin one when I upgrade to the new black edition Noctua dual fan.  Once I get it, then I'll likely just Sync All Cores for more consistently higher frame rates.  The Cooler Master Hyper 212 - Black Edition isn't anywhere near cool enough for the processor and it gets to dangerous lvl's (104 f)

Are you oc'ing or running default motherboard settings? The Hyper 212 BE on a stock 8700k or 9900k should be fine for keeping temps in check.

For leaving Asus MCE enabled or oc'ing, you should get a better cooler.

Just w/e the motherboard has w/Sync All Cores to 4.7GHz.  It's fine when they're on Auto, which's what I have it on now; but the constant 4.7GHz overheats it immensely w/only 4 heat pipes, thus far.

At stock, Asus MCE is enabled which is basically an auto-oc which also tends to use more voltage than manually oc'ing. That's probably the cause of your high temps.

Try disabling it and see if that helps.

Should performance change at all?  The only real BIOS thing I change is MBR and RAM speed, so I'm not majorly familiar w/OC, voltage, etc. or anything to that degree.

Yes, Asus MCE is basically an auto-oc and oc'ing will increase performance. Turning it off would remove that but you can probably manually oc using less voltage for similar results and lower temps.

I wouldn't know how to adjust the voltage, so it's not a major interest/past time of mine.

I wouldn't know how to adjust the voltage, so it's not a major interest/past time of mine.

Alternatively, you could just leave it at stock after disabling MCE. If all you're doing is syncing the cores to max turbo, leaving it on doesn't provide any benefit.

So MCE is set to disabled? How are you testing for temps?

Games aren't a very consistent way of testing temps. I recommend using synthetic loads like OCCT instead.

I know they're far from consistent, but it's the vast-majority of what I do w/it; so it's pretty much the only thing that matters for what I'm lookin for.  A handful of games are played heavily on it, so those're when the temps'll matter the most to me.  Everything else is goin to be irrelevant, since it won't be under load.  I'm movin 11/5, so I'll have to see what the ambient temps are there.  Also, humidity in case it's an issue.

What are temps during gaming? As long as they're kept in check, that's all that really matters.
