What the heck is the i9 10980XE ?

Settle down guys lol,  the thread name has a point.  We all know we had the 7xxx HEDT series in 2018 that flopped.  The 9980XE was much more popular and used today and ever since few months after 9900k.  Im guessing the IPC between a 7980XE  and 9980XE has a nice difference plus its i9 series and not i7.  So they had their top notch HEDT chip for about a year in the 9980XE.  Now we have a i9 10980XE .. What is the point of this CPU ?  Is it simply a refresh or does it have ICP gains over the 9980XE.  Also it works with almost 2 year old x299 chipset.  Which the 7xxx used plus the 9980XE used.  So if we see a benchmark is the 10980XE going to be reasonably faster then the 9980XE ?

actually it's identical, the only difference was a soldered IHS and boosted clock speeds. Also, I'm not so sure the 7XXX series was such a flop, and I certainly don't think the 9XXX series was a huge success by comparison.

looks to be the exact same kind of improvement 9th gen HEDT made over 7th gen, tiny clock speed increase and technically a tiny IPC increase in this case (due to "Cascade Lake") but we'll see how that pans out.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Thanks Fasauceome for the post.  Sheds some light.  Let me ask you the question of the day and that is, core for core on max 10980XE OC and 5Ghz 9900k ,, which one has better single core performance ?  BTW I saw that the power draw of a 10980XE is much less then a 9900k.  Like 267watts 9900k is 330 or something like that I don't remember and don't remember the site I saw it on.  But that is unusual a 18 core draws less then a 8 core hmmm!

We don't know yet, the current Cascade lake lineup has thus far been Xeons deployed for servers and such, so not like there are that many extreme overclocked out there with 5.0GHz on these bad boys. However chances are there won't be a huge difference, there's not even a big difference between the 9900K and a 9980XE at the same clock speed. Ice lake is expected to be the shakeup, but we don't exactly know when that's coming. I wouldn't get too excited over this 10th gen release honestly, Intel has yet to put anything meaningful out to compete with AMD.

Again, these are unconfirmed numbers. They might be relating the server parts to the potential desktop variants but that wouldn't be a perfect comparison. I think the 18 core will be plenty power hungry, Intel doesn't seem to be focused on low power draw for their desktop lineups at the moment.

Huh?

9900K is rated at 95W by intel. Of course that's base clock BS but at full 5GHz all core load it's about 160-170ish.

A lot of stupid reviews report "draw from the wall" aka including power supply losses, mobo, peripherals, GPU if any which means F all when you're specifically interested in the CPU...

I get 350W from the wall on my 9900K/1070 build when everything's under full load.

Ok I have a big question now my friend.

I do studio DAW and thus far my CPU hasn't let me down and gone to 100 percent and pop.  However in the future I wouldn't mind knowing I can take projects to extreme points.  If money is not a issue and I play eSports and I run the DAW in form of Sonar Platinum now Cakewalk by Bandlab.  What CPU is good for me out of all new 2019 CPU's and the soon to be 10980XE.  Do I get the 3900 or wait for 3950x or is that over kill and 12 cores is enough for my DAW or 8 cores in the form of 9900k is enough. Or a 10980XE or TR3 ?  Thanks a bunch.  I dont wanna over buy or under buy.. I just want whats right for my needs.  Also I do no video editing or rendering.  I might use handbrake once in a blue moon.

Generally speaking, it's best to upgrade only when you need more performance, trying to anticipate future workloads usually results in more spending than you need. Of course if you just need an excuse to get a new toy that also happens to do really well in your workloads, might as well go Ryzen. With the shiniest new features, it's hard to beat. You get the upgrade path to 16 cores if you want, PCIe Gen 4, super high speed memory overclocking, etc. While 10th gen may have 18 cores, if the ICP fails to improve much at all, we'll be seeing the 3950X beating it in most workloads regardless of the lack of 2 cores.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Also depends on whether your software knows how to use multiple cores.

Obviously an 18 core part will be way underused if not the case.

Yes the app shows all 12 of my threads.  Also they sold the company and that company promises it will keep the app up to date and to work with latest hardware and what not.  So Im sure it will recognize all 36 threads or 16 threads whatever it may be.  Also I must upgrade NOW , because my mobo is botched a faked up I can barely boot up it is used after mine died... this mobo is in bad shape I get freezes and crashes out of signal , blah blah.  Its been like this for 2 and half years but I just neglected it since it wouldn't happen to often.  However the signal loss I would get avg couple times a day.  I delt with it for almost 3 years and now Im going to upgrade I have to its really gotten bad I have to work thru this or game thru this.  Dont ask me why I didnt upgrade this thing earlier.  Anyhow.

The app supports multicore and is x64  ...... So I plan on getting 64GB of RAM.  Does this mean I go HEDT like I have now and get 8 sticks total 64GB ?  Does Sonar Platinum or Cakewalk by Bandlab like core speed or core count ?  I mean mainly its all VSTi's and plugins loaded.  Also this last project Im on I must freeze the track or else it goes to 100 percent and bonkes out.  Right now I can run 30 to 50 synths in real time with plugins on top of that and I get close to 100 percent its pretty much fully loaded and can pop out.  So I need something that I can run 100 synths if not more in real time without having to freeze it.  So I take it back my current CPU is not enough for my projects as they grew and grew.  I need something that will allow for many real time tracks and plugins and ....Right now I have to turn the midi into a wave file by freezing as I said earlier.  So about 30 VSTi's and maybe 40 VSTs.  I dont work with wave files until the project is done.  So having given more info what yall think.  9900k 3950x or HEDT 10980XE or TR3 which I don't think I need that many cores.  So scratch out TR3.  What would be good for me.  Also I need future proof.  I wanna upgrade to say a RTX 4080 one day and not need to upgrade my CPU to get high frame rates and what not.  I want this thing to last as much as my current rig 7 years.. if not 10 years......  Thanks again gurus!!!  Oh also eSports.  Gaming is important to me very much so.  If I get a RTX 4080 I wanna know I will get top performance so I need future proof.

Then that might rule out the 10980XE if you can't wait a month or 2.

9980XE maybe now they've dropped price? But that might take a few weeks to propagate as well.

First off if Im spamming as you say let the admins and mods handle it.  I have never been given a red flag for spamming on the forum.  You just have nothing better to do then pick on me when I could care less about what you do and what you post.  Your intrigued with me or something because your the only one til now that I see someone tell me I spam.  After all these posts if my behavior is bad let the admins and mods take care of it and you keep your little childish self aside.  What do you know be mature,, maybe I have brain issues or some other issue.  You don't know whos on the other side.  Your the only one crying about this and I take it as a grain of salt.

i9-9980XE   suggested price = $2000

i9-10980XE suggested price = $1000

So for half the price you get something a little faster.  Some sanity is returning to the high end.

I will definitely be upgrading this fall.  Compared to a 5960X and 64GB RAM it will be well worth it - I bumping up to at least 128GB RAM!  I do (ray trace) optical design, so the extra cores and RAM will pay off for me big time.

Yes I know about the price, its a great deal.  The 9980XE prices will adjust next month and go down a thousand bucks or so.  Dude for what you do, the 10980XE @ 4.8Ghz using TB 3.0 will crush anything you do and is worthy upgrade for you.  Some people dont do the sh*T you do and upgrade for gaming performance LOL.  A HEDT and gaming performance means the user has no idea wtf hes doing ya know.  Sure I game but not as much as Im on the desktop.  Maybe 80 percent desktop and 20 percent gaming.  Im gonna grab the 10980XE for sure as the 4.8Ghz will beat out a 9900k single core performance and you got 18 of those babies 36 threads....I had a Athlon XP long long time ago and that is my last AMD.  I can't trust them.  Im a Intel and nVidia guy.  :)  Also FYI,, the 10980XE @ 4.8Ghz will give the 3950x a beating.  All benchmarks you see are the 10980XE pegged at 3Ghz stock speed.  So forget about benchmarks.  I will put a review up when I upgrade to it along with a Aorus Master x299e and 64GB RAM and what not.

The 10980xe will be worse than the 9980xe and definitely worse than a 7980xe, ipc actually decreases and so does performance due to the hardware patches.

But of course you're talking about buying a X299 Master(lol) and think the 9900K draws more power than a 10980xe.

Damn, you smart.

Im sorry to say but your wrong.  The 10980XE has a Turbo Boost 3.0 of 4.8Ghz.  The 9980XE is 4.4 to 4.6Ghz.  Clock for clock its 10 to 15 percent more powerful.  Also Intel said you can overclock it to 5.1Ghz and what not.  So it will surprass the 9900k single core speed.  Now imagine 18 of those.  Ive seen benches at stock speed be faster then a 9980XE.  It pretty much pownz all CPU's in multi threaded and at 4.8Ghz it is as fast as a 5Ghz 9900k single core.

Wait til the reviews and benches come out.  Also the 79xx series is a horrible chip don't compare it to the 9980XE or the 10980XE and what not.
