So, bit of a weird post but wanted some input so hear me out.

Basically my motherboard has started to give me problems recently (Problems detecting RAM and occasional issues booting), currently running a AsRock Z77 Extreme4 with an I7-3770k. Because of the problems + age of the hardware, I am planning on letting this hardware live as long as it can then when my motherboard gives up the goat, upgrade my board, CPU, and RAM. I know someone might say "Why not just get a new board that supports that CPU?", well the problem is I want this stuff to last me awhile so I would rather not risk it with used hardware so I want to buy new. And from what I can find, there aren't really many reasonable options in terms of a new board that would support my old CPU.

So I guess I was wondering what people think I should upgrade to? Don't need something insane like a 9900k or something, but looking for it not to be so cheap that it is a bottleneck for my 1070 TI Hybrid. Mainly use the system for gaming/web browsing/coding.

Just in case, here is my specs as they are now

CPU: i7-3770k

Heat Sink: Hyper212 EVO

RAM: 16 GB

Motherboard: AsRock Z77 Extreme4

GPU: EVGA GTX 1070 TI Hybrid

Power Supply: 700 Watt Cooler Master

Storage: 2 TB HDD + 250 GB SSD

The thing with some of these boards is they don't die, they tend to work on its last strings for as long as it can. So it depends on how long you're willing to deal with it.

My old socket 775 board was having problems too, system won't boot, audio freezing, phantom USB disconnects and reconnects, so it's constantly doing that "ding dong" sound. It happened when DDR3 was still being used, and DDR4 was just around the corner, so I dealt with it, until DDR4 came out before doing a upgrade. That socket 775 board I have, besides the problems it has, it's still working.

Ya, it's a damn strong board, I'll give it that but it has definitely seen better days. When I first bought the thing used, I ended up having to pickup a new audio card since the built-in one was broken when I got it. And now the board runs fine except now almost every time I shut off the computer, it gets through to an error code then reboots endlessly. To fix it, I end up having to pull the cmos battery for a couple of hours then reinstall it. Wouldn't be as bad if the battery wasn't being covered by my gpu which then requires me to uninstall the card to get it out.

I think "long term", I give it say two-three months and if it still is kicking, I might just upgrade anyway because it would be nice to be able to turn off my system lol

Move your GPU to the 2nd x16 slot, that way you have easier access to the CMOS battery.

More of a reason to start upgrading now. Don't want to break your GPU just for that cmos battery.

Ya, I'll be working on that soon. Right now I have moved all the pci cards I have out of that slot (I have a sound card and wifi card in my system aswell) to avoid any possible damage.

Hey guys, felt like I would give an update after testing. I was researching my errors and a running theme was that it might be a corrupted bios chip so as a last stich effort, I bought a new one off ebay. Low and behold, my system booted up perfectly after a couple auto reboots and everything is being detected. Best $14 dollars I ever spent lol
