Hey y'all,

I live in the farthest corner of a house where the Wi-Fi router is right in the middle. I already have an Ethernet cable running to my PC, but recently I've noticed really sub-par speeds on my phone and Nintendo Switch.

I've decided that I should get an Ethernet switch and a Wi-Fi range extender so I can get better speeds for my mobile devices. My plan is to buy two more Ethernet cables to run from the switch (one to my PC, and one to the range extender).

Does anybody have recommendations that might fit my use-case? I've heard good things about the Netgear AC1200 and a few others, but they're a bit pricey for me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

Best Value Wi-Fi Range Extender

Is to not buy a wi-fi range extender. They are all garbage. You need to setup a wireless access point not a range extender. Whats the price range?

I’ve had hit or miss experiences with range extenders. They are a pain because you have to constantly switch between routers manually. I would recommend the cheapest netgear orbi. I have had it for about two years now and it’s hands down the best router I’ve ever had. In total the system is ~$180ish but it relieves so many headaches.

What exactly is the difference between a Wi-Fi range extender, and a wireless access point? This isn't a huge budget project, I just want faster Wi-Fi in my room.

Also, if you have a house with good electrical wiring you can try a power line adapter. You have to make sure it is homeplug2 certified, plug it directly into the wall, and make sure the sending and receiving unit are plugged into the same breaker.

A range extender attempts to pickup the existing wifi signal and spit it out again. A wireless access point gets connected to ethernet directly and holds a new wireless network.
