Ok so my isp says that i can use my own router / modem. But I have to have this attached for my cable to work. 

But now my modem / router ain't working through wired connection. I just need to know what this is.

It's the way your house is wired. Most houses have coax already, and not ethernet wiring. Read the website @Skiiwee29 linked, it has all the information you need.

It's used for things like Coaxial to Ethernet adapters. So if you want to wire your PC to your router in another room, and your house isn't wired with Ethernet, older houses might still have coax wiring for cable TV. So you use this adapter to use it like an Ethernet cable. It can be used for other things too, I'm sure. Hope this helps!
