It's a tower, so basically everything in it is upgradable/swapable.

What are you looking to do exactly?

You can upgrade the CPU,GPU and RAM,

You will have to use a different PSU for GPUs that require 6 pin power and above.

A i7 2600,16GB RAM and a RX 580 will work nicely.

Sometimes a new bios is needed to support a newer graphics card.

Do you game? Edit photos? Do 3D work? or just browse the web? Your first step should be replacing your hard drive with an SSD. This is where you will see the biggest difference.

I believe that it's a similar chipset to a optiplex 790. I placed a xeon e3-1240 in one of those.

E3-1240 $38

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F174040948075

New power supply $40

https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/6902773/EVGA-BR-Power-Supply-Internal-120/

Better power supply $53

https://www.newegg.com/corsair-cx-series-cx450-450w/p/N82E16817139201

If you have 1 4gb stick of ram add a second stick. Try to search for the same model # on Ebay. Should be around $10

256gb SSD $35

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01K8A2A0E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_IkTMDbMZDK0XY

RX 470 used. offer $55 plus $10 shipping

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F183965191289

$190 - $215 all in

Yes but barely, mostly homework and web browsing

In that case forget the power supply and rx 470 I suggested. Get a rx 560 and keep your current psu.

Also your current CPU is probably fine for your tasks.

So just add the Ram, ssd, and the rx 560

It's an old computer, chances are your hard drive is getting worn out.

Start out with getting an SSD and more ram. Cheapest and most worthwhile option for you right now. After that if it still feels slow then you should look at upgrading other components.

IMO I don't think you should invest in a GPU yet unless you want to start playing some graphically intensive games.
