This is strange, I've just built my dads new computer.

Checked that everything works installed some programs and windows update.

I installed hwmonitor to check the CPU temperature (amd athlon x4 760k, cooled with a artic cooling freezer 7 pro)

And it says the cpu temperature is hovering around 70idle and it shoots up to 120c when ever I do anything...... what why is it so high?

I've re-seated the cooler and no change...

Coretemp wont even show the temperature of the cores, just a 0's

Make sure the CPU is properly recognized in the BIOS and is running at the proper clock speed and voltage.

You say you re-seated the cooler, so can we assume you properly used thermal paste on the cooler? And you didn't do something doofus-ish and leave a plastic cover on the bottom of the cooler?

Edit - a good point above - are those temps in F rather than C?

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.

Nah I'm not that silly.

Yes I used enough paste on the bottom, I'm using my old cpu cooler, so I know how well it supposes to do and theres nothing on the bottom.

Temps are in C.

Is fluctuating all over the place from 70 to 120 in a split second...

Even the voltage is jumping around from 0.896 to 1.3...for no reason in CPU-Z, I've not even touched anything in the bios...

Here is when I open a program (not doing anything, just opening it)

http://i57.tinypic.com/zogxuu.png

The computer is showing no sign of being overly hot inside, but no other program will show me the cpu temperature.

The BIOS shows the temperature as around 70 however, which is always higher than it is while actually booted up...

I dunno what to do

EDIT:

Checked speedfan - according to that the CPU temperature is sitting around 40idle and when I do what I did above only goes to around 55-60c....

so i dunno which to believe...

There is no way you can monitor a CPU at 120C it will just turn balck and turn off (the monitor), no blue screen or anything. Also what is your thermal thresehold in the BIOS? Did you use too much thermal paste? that can cause a lot of problems. Did you perfectly clean both surfaces before reseating? you should be using rubbing alcohol.

To ensure you're getting the right reading, check the CPU temp. in the BIOS.

it looks like a sensor or software bug where the temp is virtual going to the max only. i would only be worried if the temp stayed at 120 oc.  it not possible for the temp to go from 50 to 120 in 1s and back again.
