Does Ubuntu system update itself to the latest version?

So, my main question is, if for ex. there's already installed old version of Ubuntu on PC, will it update itself to new one without requiring reinstallation of OS or discs & etc?

Yup. As long as it has an internet connection you can update the OS.

 

EDIT: You might have to start it manually. I don't know if there is a setting to upgrade automatically though.

If I install for example Ubuntu 11-10 version on PC, will it's update's make it latest 12 version itself? Or if I want 12 version I need to burn in on a new CD? Cause I have 11-10 & don't want to waste another CD.

You can run the update manager and it should tell you if there's a new OS release (usually in April and October there are new OS releases).

I forgot to mention that you can have it tell you whenever there is a new OS release, or just LTS (Long Term Support) editions.

Yup. As long as it has an internet connection you can update the OS.

If you have a spare usb key of appropriate size you can download and create a usb installer too.

my iso file was Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit.

Should I use Ubuntu 13.10 instead?

Either should work, assuming 64bit and usb bootable capable computer. Any kind of error?

 

I have had similar issues. Have you tried a program called Unetbootin? It has worked for me when I have had issues with creating a successful boot usb. Other than that try making it again, hopefully its just a failed bootable instance and not a corrupted iso. I do assume you are not downloading the iso every time you try and make a usb?

Bootable USB creators along the lines of Unetbootin and Linux Live USB Creator might cause issues actually booting the USB drive (due to the program including an incompatible bootloader or something - ran into that issue creating a bootable USB for Arch linux). I usually use ISO to USB which burns the disc image as is onto the USB drive (as if the USB were a DVD/CD). Found that to be the most reliable way to create a bootable USB. 

 

dd for Windows/Linux is the other most reliable method.

It seemed motherboard of my 2nd PC didn't like that usb install (couldn't boot), but when I tested that flash usb on my z77 it booted perfectly. At the end I removed my DVD rom from my system & installed it on that PC, lol
